Verizon backtracks on $2 fee after customer outrage (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Verizon Wireless has reversed its decision to charge a $2 fee for one-time telephone and online bill payments bowing to a storm of criticism from consumers and the U.S. communications regulator.

The biggest U.S. wireless operator retracted its decision on Friday, just a day after it announced the fee, which was to have begun January 15.

The consumer victory comes after Bank of America recently decided against a new $5 monthly fee for debit card users after consumer and lawmaker uproar about the charge.

Verizon said it was making the decision based on customer input after many consumers spoke out about the fee on the company's online forum, with some threatening to leave the service as a result.

The Verizon Wireless turn-around came after the U.S. Federal Communications Commission said it was "concerned" about the fee and vowed to look into it.

"On behalf of American consumers, we're concerned about Verizon's actions and are looking into the matter," an official for the FCC said earlier on Friday.

The prospect of a $2 fee created a flurry of online activity and one consumer organization, Change.org, said that 95,000 people joined a campaign on its website urging Verizon to drop the fee.

"The era of corporations walking roughshod over consumers without consequence is officially over," Ben Rattray, chief executive of Change.org, said in a statement.

Verizon Wireless customers told the company, often in colorful language, that they would not put up with the fee.

"If this fee goes through, I will be taking my business elsewhere!!!" one person said on the Verizon Wireless website.

Another said "Victory is ours!" after the turn-around.

The Verizon Wireless uproar served to highlight practices in the communications industry. Its rivals AT&T Inc and Sprint Nextel said on Friday that they charge some customers $5 for bill payments, revising their comments from the day before.

AT&T and Comcast Corp say that they charge some customers who look for personal assistance in paying their bills but that they do not charge for online payments.

Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.

Meryl Streep gets glowing reviews as UK's Thatcher (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Meryl Streep looks set for an unprecedented 17th Oscar nomination after earning glowing reviews for her performance as Britain's Margaret Thatcher in the movie "The Iron Lady".

"Virtuoso", "translucent", and "compelling" were among the words used by U.S. movie critics this week to describe Streep's turn as Britain's polarizing, and only female, prime minister.

"Is there anything that Meryl Streep can't do as an actress? One can only marvel at her virtuoso performance as Britain's Margaret Thatcher," said Rolling Stone reviewer Peter Travers.

"The Iron Lady", in which Streep plays Thatcher both as a rising politician and as a confused, elderly woman looking back on her 1979-90 period in office, opens in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, and reaches British movie theaters on January 6.

Streep, 62, already has a record 16 Academy Award acting nominations. But she has won the Oscar only twice, for "Kramer vs Kramer" in 1979 and "Sophie's Choice" in 1982.

Her turn as Thatcher has put her on the short-list for Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards in January, ahead of the Oscar nominations announcement on January 26.

Time magazine's Richard Corliss called Streep's performance as Thatcher, who is now 86, "a triumph"; Leah Rozen, writing for TheWrap.com, said Streep was "astonishingly accurate in mimicking the look, voice, gait and mannerisms of her real life character."

However "The Iron Lady" itself won fewer fans, scoring a 63 percent positive rating on movie aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

New York Magazine's David Edelstein described the film as "shallow but satisfying, largely because of Meryl Streep and her big fake English teeth and gift for using mimicry as a means of achieving empathy."

Writing in the New York Times, A.O. Scott praised the brilliance of Streep's performance and said the movie was "likely to be the definitive screen treatment of Mrs. Thatcher, at least for a while."

But Scott added; "You are left with the impression of an old woman who can't quite remember who she used to be and of a movie that is not so sure either."

European shares edge higher, Italy debt sale eyed

LONDON | Thu Dec 29, 2011 3:19am EST

LONDON Dec 29 (Reuters) - European shares rose on Thursday in low volume, recovering from the previous session falls, on hope there would be demand at an Italian auction of long-term sovereign debt after the European Central Bank's three-year funding operation last week.

"Volume is low and I hope we have a reasonable result at the Italian auction, but we are stuck in a trading range," Andrea Williams, manager of Royal London Asset Management's European Income fund.

"The ECB three-year funding has been a great thing as it has brought a lot of stability to the system and the market."

At 0807 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up 0.2 percent at 983.83 points.

Mining stocks featured among the top performers, STOXX Europe 600 Basic Resources index which fell in the previous gained 0.6 percent as risk appetite improved.

3.7 million Android devices activated over the Christmas weekend

Android Central

With Christmas all said and done for yet another year, it's time for those at Google to start looking at the number of devices that got activated over the Holidays. Luckily, Andy Rubin anticipated our wondering and has given up the goods:

UPDATE: There were 3.7M Android activations on 12/24 and 12/25. Congrats team-android!

Also, as noted on his Google+ account from previously -- "activations" means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service. It does not count devices that have been resold. That's a pretty nice number -- congrats team Android indeed.

Sixth-Grader LIGHTS UP High School Basketball Competition

Damon Harge may be 5'4" and in sixth grade, but he is torching high school kids at basketball right now. In fact, he's one of the nation's best H.S. point guards!

Imagine when he's taller, heavier and more experienced.

Despite his age (12) and weight (120), Harge is competing at the high school level for Creedmor (N.C.) Christian Faith Center Academy and more than holding his own:

"I looked him up and it's hard not to be impressed watching his YouTube videos," Christian Faith Center Academy coach Kendrick Williams told ESPN of Harge.

"I wasn't sure about how that would translate on the varsity level, but I was excited to find out. I just kept thinking 'he's only 12?'"

He is, and once scored 50 POINTS at a national tournament in front of former #1 NBA draft pick John Wall, who immediately emerged as Harge's #1 fan.

"The kid was unguardable," Wall said, recalling that game. "I knew right away he was a star. I just wanted him to continue to work hard."

"Yeah, he should be concentrating on having fun, but, at the same time, what's he gonna say, 'No thanks, I don't want to be ranked right now?'

Plus, I'd be shocked if there's a player that's more skilled than him at his age. It's not wrong and it's not his fault. It's just the day and age we live in."

How IBM Built the Most Powerful Computer in the World

Chris Marroquin is waist-deep in a hole in the floor. He's a tall guy with a medium build, but he looks awfully short now, and his shirt is pumped up to Schwarzenegger size by a 60-degree breeze blustering all around him. Grappling with a 1-inch-diameter hose, he attempts to explain the liquid-cooling system of IBM's next-generation supercomputer to me, but I can barely hear him over the howling wind. We're in a development room of IBM's Rochester, Minn., facility, where engineers test and assemble the company's Blue Gene supercomputers. The air buffeting Marroquin cools a small, four-rack Blue Gene/P system capable of 13.9 teraflops per rack, but the hose he's holding is part of a far more advanced cooling system. Filled with deionized water, the anti-corrosive agent benzotriazole and a dose of biocide, the tube feeds into a prototype of the company's new Blue Gene/Q computer. The Blue Gene/Q rack sitting on the raised floor has its own circulatory system?850 feet of copper pipe, with check valves, quick-disconnect rubber hoses and an electronic monitor that measures flow rate, pressure and dew point?designed to shut down if anything goes awry. "You don't want any drips," Marroquin says.

As sophisticated as the cooling system is, what launches this machine into the realm of technological superlatives is its processing power: Each rack contains 1024 computer chips, and every one of those chips has 16 processor cores. That's a total of 16,384 processors, making it capable of 209 teraflops, 15 times more power per rack than the Blue Gene/P. Within the next year IBM will ship 96 Blue Gene/Q racks to Bruce Goodwin at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California. Collectively, those racks will become the most powerful computer in the world. It should be able to predict the path of hurricanes, decode gene sequences and analyze the ocean floor to discover oil. But Goodwin primarily wants to use it to blow up a nuclear bomb.

Goodwin used explode nukes the old-fashioned way. From 1983 to 1991, he designed and oversaw five nuclear weapons tests at the Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site. He and other engineers would dig a 2000-foot-deep hole, toss a warhead and some highly specialized monitoring equipment into a 10-story-tall, 1-million-pound iron canister and lower it into the hole. Then everybody would move way the heck back, cross their fingers and detonate. "Sitting in the control room 10 miles away, it felt like a magnitude 5 or 6 earthquake," Goodwin says.

All that changed in October 1992, when then President George H.W. Bush declared a moratorium on nuclear testing in anticipation of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty of 1996. After that, if the United States wanted to test any of the warheads in its multithousand-weapon arsenal, it had to do a computer simulation. Thus, our interest in really powerful computers was nationalized.

Really powerful computers have been around as long as computers themselves, but the term supercomputer didn't arrive until 1976, when Seymour Cray built the Cray-1. It cost $8.8 million ($35 million in today's dollars) and cranked up to 160 megaflops. Yesterday's supercomputer, however, has less power than today's personal computer?a modern PC has more than 50 times the processing horsepower of the original Cray. In fact, the "super" prefix is so fuzzy that many computer scientists eschew the term supercomputer altogether and call such machines high-performance computers, or HPCs. In an attempt to bring some clarity to the genre, in 1993 a private group called the Top500 project started publishing a twice-yearly list of the 500 most powerful computers in the world. If your computer is on the list, it is by definition a supercomputer.

For 17 of the Top500 list's 18 years, the U.S. and Japan have swapped supremacy. But in October 2010, China claimed the top spot with the 2.6-petaflop Tianhe-1A. The computer scientists who design and build these systems tend to work for multinational companies and are cautious about characterizing what they do as a statement of national pride. Regardless, supercomputers have come to symbolize the technological prowess of the countries that build them?a silicon-age version of the space race. In a sign of the whipsaw speed of technological progress, Japan eclipsed China just eight months later, in June 2011, unveiling the 8-petaflop K Computer. The Chinese countered in August, outlining a road map to "exascale" computing, essentially promising a 125-fold increase in computing power within 10 years. If Tianhe-1A was China's Sputnik moment, exascale is its moonshot.

The supercomputer's role in maintaining America's nuclear weapons justifies its status as a national security interest. But China's challenge to the West's computing dominance has led many computer scientists and policy wonks to claim that supercomputing is essential to U.S. economic security as well. These machines are force multipliers for American scientists, engineers and businesses, the argument goes, and whoever builds the best ones gains an advantage. Supercomputers don't just reflect intellectual and technological power, they also reinforce it.

The folks at IBM Rochester betray little interest in China's goal of supercomputing dominance. Their job is to work out the engineering for Blue Gene/Q, and they deliberately focus on the technology, not the politics. They are classic pocket-protector engineers, and their titles are inelegant bureaucratic artifacts that offer little clue to their actual roles. "We're a very small, roll-up-your-sleeves team effort," says Pat Mulligan, development manager for Global Server Integration (who, for the record, had his sleeves rolled up when we spoke). "We're not overly nationalistic, we just want to make the best computer we can."

The building where Marroquin, Mulligan and the rest of the IBM team are creating the 21st century's most powerful computers is a monument to mid-20th-century corporate futurism. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen (who also designed the St. Louis Gateway Arch), the sprawling structure is clad in dark blue glass. Hallways a half-mile long stretch through the interior. At some point IBM?always pushing the technological envelope?concealed wires in the hallway floors to guide robots that delivered parts and machinery from one assembly room to another. The robots are long gone, a dream of mechanical efficiency undone by reality: They were slow and broke down so often that the facility switched to human-guided forklifts.

The Blue Gene/Q computers I'm getting a look at in midsummer are not part of Bruce Goodwin's supercomputer (named Sequoia). These are test models, used to work out the kinks in the hardware and software. The manufacturing of Sequoia's 96 racks was due to ramp up soon after my visit, but Goodwin and his team at Lawrence Livermore are already logging in to Blue Gene/Q and tinkering from afar; a sign on one of the racks in the Rochester assembly room says LLNL REMOTE ACCESS MACHINE.

Goodwin's Terascale Simulation Facility (TSF) at Livermore is one of two DOE centers that perform nuclear simulations as part of the Stockpile Stewardship Program (the other is at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico). To get a simulation that delivers an acceptable degree of accuracy, Goodwin's team models a 50-microsecond explosion in three dimensions down to a scale of 10 microns. "It gets very complicated," Goodwin says. "These things are imploding and exploding, and you have to track the fluid mechanics with the precision of a Swiss watch." Every time a component is changed or upgraded in a U.S. nuclear warhead, the TSF virtually tests the bomb to make sure it will still go boom. The computer simulations have revealed aspects of nuclear fission that testers hadn't anticipated, and, consequently, the number and complexity of algorithms have increased over time. Modern simulations model only parts of a full explosion, and even then, the most complex sims Goodwin runs use about a million lines of code. If you had 1600 years, the calculations could conceivably be done on a laptop; Livermore's current 500-teraflop Blue Gene/P system, named Dawn, gets a high-complexity sim done in a month. When the 20-petaflop Sequoia system goes live in 2012, the test time should drop to a week.

Serbia folk diva back in court (AP)

BELGRADE, Serbia ? Serbia's folk diva Svetlana Raznatovic on Monday denied charges of violent behavior she and another defendant are facing for allegedly insulting and beating up the manager of a football club.

Raznatovic claimed at a court hearing that it was she who was insulted.

"He (the manager) even wanted to attack me," she told the court. "I have never caused any incidents."

The hearing was briefly interrupted when the singer complained she was feeling ill and asked for a glass of water.

Raznatovic is already serving eight months under house arrest as part of a plea bargain for pleading guilty in an illegal sale of players from her late husband's football club.

The plea deal from May also envisaged that Raznatovic pay (EURO)1.5 million ($2 million) fine for embezzling millions gained from the players' transfer.

Raznatovic, better known as Ceca, is one of the most popular singers in the Balkans, known for her plunging necklines and hoarse voice.

She was married to the notorious warlord Zeljko Raznatovic, also known as Arkan, whose troops were accused of atrocities during the 1990s Balkan wars.

Arkan was gunned down in a Belgrade hotel in 2000, but Ceca continued to manage his football club while allegedly also maintaining connections with Serbian crime bosses and former paramilitary leaders.

Wall St Week Ahead: Santa rally may face test next week (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Get ready. The last trading week of the year will be a test for stocks to prove whether they have the strength to carry a rally into next year.

The broad S&P 500 index broke through its 200-day moving average on Friday after turning positive for the year as a four-day rally lifted stocks following a spell of better-than-expected economic data. At Friday's close, the S&P 500 was up 0.6 percent for the year.

But despite the recent economic data that suggest the U.S. economy is on the right track to recovery, Europe's sovereign debt crisis is troubling investors and weighing on the market.

Many market participants are reluctant to believe in a "Santa Claus rally" this year, which refers to stocks' seasonal tendency to gain in the final five trading days of the year and first two trading days of the new year.

Warnings from major credit rating agencies on a potential downgrade of several European nations have kept investors on edge. After Standard & Poor's surprised financial markets back in August with a downgrade of the United States' triple-A credit rating on a Friday evening, investors worry a similar move could come at any time - even between Christmas and New Year's.

But the absence of European sovereign bond auctions for the next two weeks could lend support to stocks.

"The fact that there won't be a (European) bond auction until the second week of January, that takes away some spotlight from Europe, at least for a little while," TD Ameritrade chief derivatives strategist J.J. Kinahan said.

"Unless we get earth-shattering news, the S&P could go up to (the) 1,300 levels," he said.

The S&P 500 closed on Friday at 1,265.33.

The correlation between U.S. stocks and European sovereign bond yields has been high, especially the link with Spanish, Italian and German bonds. A poor bond auction in any one of these countries could trigger an instant selloff in the U.S. stock market.

SANTA CLAUS VS BEAR CLAWS

What happens next week is important as it sets a tone for the coming year.

"If Santa should fail to call, bears may come to Broad & Wall," so goes the Wall Street adage, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

Ari Wald, a technical strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman, said the key level on the S&P 500 to watch is 1,260, which is a resistance from the index's downward sloping 200-day moving average and the downtrend connecting its October and December peaks.

"A breakout above this supply would argue for continued seasonal strength through the first quarter of 2012," he said.

He also noted that 1,200 is support from the index's downward sloping 100-day moving average and the uptrend connecting its October & November lows.

"A breach of this demand could stir additional technical selling to 1,130-1,150 intermediate-term support," Wald said.

With many investors absent until the start of 2012, trading volume is expected to be light, creating more volatility.

Next week's data includes the S&P 500 Case-Shiller House Price Index and consumer confidence data on Tuesday.

The Chicago Purchasing Managers Index and pending home sales data are due on Thursday. After a strong gain in November, the Chicago index is seen giving back a modest amount in December.

China plans further cut to railway spending (AP)

BEIJING ? China's government announced another cut in railway construction spending Friday amid concern about the debts of the world's biggest rail network and the safety of its showcase bullet trains.

Beijing will spend about 400 billion yuan ($65 billion) next year on railway construction, Railways Minister Sheng Guangzu said at an industry conference, the state Xinhua News Agency reported. That is down from what Xinhua said is expected spending of 469 billion yuan ($75 billion) this year and a sharp drop from 2010's 700 billion yuan ($112 billion).

Beijing is rapidly expanding China's 56,000-mile (91,000-kilometer) rail network, which is overloaded with passengers and cargo. But it has scaled back plans amid concern about whether Sheng's ministry can repay its mounting debts.

Critics complain authorities have spent too much on high-speed lines, a prestige project for the ruling Communist Party, while failing to invest enough in expanding cheaper, slower routes to serve China's poor majority.

A failure to expand rail capacity could choke economic growth because exporters away from China's coast rely on rail to get goods to ports.

The Xinhua report Friday gave no details of spending plans or where the government intends to expand service.

The rail ministry's mounting debts have prompted concern about whether it will have to be bailed out by Chinese taxpayers. Private sector analysts say revenues from ticket sales and freight charges probably are insufficient to pay its publicly reported 2 trillion yuan ($300 billion) in debt.

Beijing reined in the rapid expansion of its bullet train network after a July 23 crash that killed 40 people triggered a public outcry about a system that critics say is dangerous and too costly for a poor country. The speed of the fastest lines also was reduced.

Xinhua described Friday's announcement as the first time the communist government has announced a "clear goal for future railway development." It said construction "has been almost halted" since the bullet train crash.

Sheng, the railway minister, announced a moratorium in August on new rail projects while the government carried out a nationwide safety inspection.

Government plans announced earlier call for expanding the rail network to 75,000 miles (120,000 kilometers) by 2020.

In a report this week, the World Bank called China's system "by far the most densely trafficked railway network in the world." It recommended that Beijing overhaul its system of state-set prices and allow rail managers more flexibility in setting ticket and cargo prices to make trains more efficient and affordable.

Can All-Season Tires Really Handle the Snow?

Back in 1977, Goodyear introduced the Tiempo, the first tire dubbed all-season. The idea was simple and alluring: Instead of dealing with the hassle of switching between snow and summer tires as the seasons change, drivers could use one tire all the time. Sales skyrocketed and other companies quickly followed suit. These days nearly all vehicles sold in the United States are fitted with all-season tires from the factory, and 97.5 percent of replacement-tire sales are the same. But is that such a good idea? Actually, no. It turns out that all-season tires are fine in warmer months, but in the snow, they lack traction compared with dedicated snow tires. And that means that the millions of drivers who make do with all-season tires in the winter months are driving cars that aren't as safe as those shod with tires designed for icy conditions.

We know because we traveled to northern Minnesota, home of some of the nation's harshest conditions, to test the claim of the all-season tire. And since all-wheel drive is rapidly becoming a common option, we also tested the notion that the feature is a suitable substitute for snow tires. Our assumption was that, while AWD improves some aspects of winter performance, it doesn't help a car turn or stop, and the added weight of the mechanical bits can actually be a disadvantage. Common sense and physics suggested this to be true, but nothing proves a point like data. And the best way to gather data on winter-tire performance is to find yourself an icy, snowy proving ground.

Ice Driving

There's something foreboding about traveling to a place so cold it's called the Ice Box, but Baudette, Minn., was the perfect place to run our experiments. The sprawling Automotive Enviro Testing facility there specializes in frigid-weather testing for many large auto manufacturers. With a five-month winter season, the facility can maintain enormous snow and ice surfaces kept within strict tolerances by GPS-controlled tractors towing custom-built ice- and snow-grooming systems?basically the world's largest Zambonis.

To set a level playing field, we brought along two nearly identical four-cylinder 2011 Chevy Equinoxes?one optioned with front-wheel drive, the other with AWD. We ran both through a series of tests to measure acceleration, braking, hill-climb and turning ability. The cars were first outfitted with Goodyear all-season tires, then we ran the tests again with Goodyear snow tires. We ran each test numerous times and then averaged the results. To minimize the variables, the same driver performed all the tests, and the traction- and stability-control systems were left on. Data collection was completed with the industry standard VBOX?a GPS and accelerometer-based data logger.

The Bottom Line

In a contest between all-season and winter tires driven on snow and ice, the latter won the day. Although the year-round rubber performed admirably, it's clear in all situations that with either FWD or AWD there's a substantial advantage to having proper rubber under you. The results were especially striking during braking and cornering, when snow tires improved performance by up to 5 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

Buying and living with winter tires isn't that much of an inconvenience, but there are some guidelines you should follow:

If you live anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line, it's probably worthwhile to invest in winter tires.

Make sure you buy four tires; skimping and putting winter tires only on the drive end of the car will result in unpredictable handling and could be dangerous.

If you'd rather not remount your tires each season, pick up a separate set of inexpensive steel wheels for permanent winter-tire duty. (This also keeps expensive alloy wheels from getting damaged in harsh, salty winter conditions.)

Swap to winter tires around Thanksgiving and back to all-season or summer tires around Easter?winter tires' softer rubber compounds wear quickly in warmer temperatures.

Store off-season tires in a cool, dry area out of the sun, and consider wrapping them in black plastic bags to reduce oxidation.

Keep in mind that having two sets of tires isn't doubling the expense, it's halving the wear. You'll have twice the number of tires but buy new ones half as often.

Remember, fancy new tires or not, the standard winter driving advice still applies: Slow down, double your following distances, anticipate traffic changes ahead, and give yourself extra time to get where you're going. Good luck out there!

Prince Harry helps friend after London mugging

(AP) ? Royal officials say Prince Harry showed up at a London police station to help a friend who had been mugged.

Harry's Clarence House office says the 27-year-old prince went to support a friend who was reporting a robbery.

British media say Thomas van Straubenzee was robbed in a south London street while on the phone with Harry, who raced across the city to help. When he could not find Van Straubenzee, Harry went to the local police station, where he gave a witness statement.

Police said a mobile phone was recovered after the Nov. 30 robbery. A suspect has been arrested and bailed.

Harry, an army helicopter pilot, recently returned from a two-month training exercise in the United States.

Another Palestinian mosque torched in West Bank (AP)

RAMALLAH, West Bank ? Vandals set fire to another mosque in the West Bank on Thursday and defaced it with Hebrew graffiti. Suspicion fell on Jewish extremists widely assumed to be behind stepped-up violence against Palestinians and the Israeli military.

The governor of Ramallah, Laila Ghanam, said arsonists doused the mosque in the village of Burqa with gasoline, then set it afire.

The Hebrew words for "war" and "Mitzpe Yitzhar" were painted in red on a wall, and the Israeli military said carpets and chairs were burned.

Mitzpe Yitzhar is an unauthorized Jewish settlement outpost in the West Bank where Israeli security forces demolished two structures early Thursday.

In recent years, settlers have attacked Palestinian and Israeli military targets in retaliation for Israeli government operations they see as overly sympathetic to Palestinians.

The increasing frequency of the attacks, the sparse number of arrests and paucity of indictments have generated allegations that the Israeli government isn't acting forcefully enough against extremists after two years of violence.

On Wednesday, following an assault on an Israeli military base, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved measures to clamp down on extremists, including giving soldiers the authority to make arrests and to ban extremists from contentious areas.

History Channel's "Pawn Stars" begets "Cajun Pawn Stars" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Been wondering where you can hock that spare cow you have sitting around? Look no further than the Silver Dollar Pawn & Jewelry Center in Alexandria, La., the setting for the History Channel's spin-off of its most popular series, "Pawn Stars."

"Cajun Pawn Stars," which premieres on History on January 8, will revolve around Silver Dollar Pawn, a shop that, in addition to dealing in jewelry and collectibles, also trades in livestock. One transaction involves donkeys.

Silver Dollar is operated by Jimmie "Big Daddy" DeRamus, along with DeRamus' daughter Tammie and his younger brother Johnnie. The 20,000-square-foot store houses more than 100,000 items, and is an attraction for school and tourist bus tours. History Channel's release on the show notes that the shop's customers will include a daily stream of "quirky local characters."

DeRamus has been in the pawn business for nearly three decades, and is described as a "walking encyclopedia" of knowledge about valuable and historic collectibles. He likes to make bold moves in acquiring rare artifacts, and in the premiere episode, makes a $500,000 offer to obtain rare bank notes.

Joe Simon, Co-Creator Of 'Captain America,' Dies At 98

PHILADELPHIA ? Joe Simon, who along with Jack Kirby co-created Captain America and was one of the comic book industry's most revered writers, artists and editors, has died. He was 98.

Simon's family relayed word of his death Thursday, posting a short statement on Facebook and telling The Associated Press through a spokesman that the 98-year-old Simon died Wednesday night in New York City after a brief illness.

"Joe was one of a kind," said Steve Saffel of Titan Books, a Simon friend who worked with him on his recent autobiography, "Joe Simon, My Life In Comics."

Saffel said that Simon, born in Rochester, N.Y., in 1913, "lived life on his terms and created incredible things in the process. It was a privilege to know him and to call him my friend."

Among his creations was a partnership with comic book artist and illustrator Jack Kirby. The duo worked hand-in-glove for years and from their fertile imaginations sprang a trove of characters, heroes, villains and misfits for several comic book companies in their Golden Age of the 1940s, including Timely, the forerunner of today's Marvel Comics; National Periodicals, the forerunner of DC; and Fawcett, among others.

The characters the two created included the Newsboy Legion, the Boy Commandos and scores more, including Blue Bolt.

"Blue Bolt was the first strip Jack and I worked on together, beginning in 1940. He was a science fiction swashbuckler I created for Curtis Publishing, the company that put out the Saturday Evening Post," Simon told The Associated Press earlier this year. "They had decided to jump on the comic book bandwagon. Jack joined me with the second issue. Like Captain America, Blue Bolt got his powers from an injection, long before the baseball players were doing it."

For Timely, the duo created Captain America, debuting on the cover of "Captain America Comics" No. 1 in December 1940 with the champion of liberty throwing a solid right-hook at Adolph Hitler, an entire year before the United States entered World War II.

"Jack and I read the newspapers, and knew what was going on over in Europe. And there he was ? Adolf Hitler, with his ridiculous moustache, high-pitched ranting and goose-stepping followers. He was the perfect bad guy, much better than anything we could have made up, so what we needed was to create his ultimate counterpart," Simon told AP.

"Cap is one of the great comic book icons, and as dangerous as the world is today ? more than it was in the 1940s ? we need him around more than ever to act as our moral compass," Simon said.

Mark Evanier, a comic industry historian and Jack Kirby biographer, noted that Simon, besides being able to write and draw, also knew how to edit comics.

"Joe himself was the first great real editor who brought to comics skills he'd learned elsewhere and had some perception of how to put a magazine together and how to make a professional looking publication," Evanier told The AP on Thursday. "He had some business acumen. He knew how to talk to publishers, he knew how to make deals."

He also knew the market, Evanier said, noting that Simon, along with Kirby, plunged head first into creating horror, crime, humor and romance comics in the aftermath of World War II.

Simon said earlier this year that creating the romance comics was a high point for him and Kirby because they "negotiated to own half of the property," something that had been an uncertain prospect in the industry.

"I'd like to think that we showed today's comic book writers and artists how they can do more than just make a living producing comic books, and hold onto the fruits of their labors," he said.

Simon is survived by two sons, three daughters and eight grandchildren.

A new rumor points to the potential power of the Wii U (Digital Trends)

We still don?t know the exact date when the Wii U will descend upon us, but Nintendo?s next offering?and the first console in the next generation of gaming?is stepping ever closer to reality?if the reports and leaks are to be believed.

It is tough to keep a secret when your technology is semi-dependent on numerous third-party developers. Earlier in the year, EA claimed that the Wii U would be?at least as powerful as the Xbox 360 and PS3, and possibly up to 50-percent more powerful. Yet through it all, Nintendo has remained mum on what to expect from its next offering.

That?s OK though, we have the internet.

According to a source that spoke with Wii U Daily, the Wii U is being tested with the following specs under the hood:

  • Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU
  • 768 MB of DRAM ?embedded? with the CPU, and shared between CPU and GPU
  • Unknown, 40nm ATI-based GPU
While this should be considered a rumor?as all news about the Wii U should be classified as a rumor until Nintendo decides to officially release info?it is in keeping with what we?ve been hearing. With one exception. It is worth noting the insane amount of eDRAM listed, which means that it is either a typo, a confirmation that the source is wrong, or that the Wii U is going to be so powerful that it may become sentient and try to take over the world.

The article also notes that the ?Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU? is very close to the Xbox 360 and PS3?which is true as both run 3.2 GHz processors, although the architecture is very different and a direct?comparison?is?pointless?until we have all the details. The source also claims that the Nintendo has been testing two versions, one with 768 MB of DRAM, and the other with 1 GB.

With the exception of the memory listed, it sounds fairly close to the rumors we heard earlier in the year which claimed that the Wii U would be roughly 50-percent more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360, lending a bit of credence to the source.?The Wii U will also support 1080p graphics and Nintendo has confirmed that it is investigating the possibility of 3D compatibility.

The thing that really stands out though is the mention of the possibility of 1 GB eDRAM. To put that in perspective, the Xbox 360 has 10 MB of eDRAM, while the PS3 does not use any. Embedded DRAM is becoming more and more common in both the gaming industry and for computing processors in general, but even the brand new POWER7 processor from IBM that was released just last year only features 32 MB of eDRAM.

That shouldn???t invalidate the rest of the rumor though, as it is far more likely that the Wii U will have some amount of eDRAM, but the 768 MB or 1 GB RAM is referring to more traditional memory. The Xbox 360 has 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM, while the PS3 uses 256 MB. If the 768 MB is correct, that would be in keeping with the ???50-percent more powerful??

But for now it is all just rumor and innuendo, and we may have a long wait before us until we have solid details from Nintendo. ?

Trump wants say in GOP race, mulls independent bid

(AP) ? Sure, he's out of the GOP presidential race, but The Donald isn't content to sit on the sidelines. Donald Trump wants a say in who gets the nomination, so he's hosting a presidential debate, holding out the prospect of his endorsement and threatening an independent run.

All that has some conservatives grousing that Trump's involvement is tarnishing the GOP's image and diminishing the Republican presidential field as it tries to field a candidate to beat President Barack Obama next year.

"GOP candidates would be foolish to show up at Trump's clown circus/ debate. Walk away," Republican strategist Mike Murphy advised on Twitter.

Republican strategist Karl Rove, President George W. Bush's longtime adviser, added on Fox News: "What the heck are the Republican candidates doing showing up at a debate with a guy who says, 'I may run for president next year as an independent'?"

Trump, predictably, is undeterred.

On Monday, the TV celebrity met with Newt Gingrich, the latest presidential contender to visit Trump's New York offices in search of his support, and he released a campaign-style book to offer his views on the economy and the media in his typically bombastic style.

In a round of TV interviews, he blistered many of the GOP candidates, saying that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney "doesn't get the traction" he needs to nail down the nomination and calling Rep. Ron Paul and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman "joke candidates."

And given the field, Trump added, "I would certainly think about running as an independent."

During one interview, Trump was asked if he agreed with Gingrich's assertion that there are no role models in the inner-cities. Trump backed up Gingrich; civil rights leader Al Sharpton called the statement offensive and threatened protests if he didn't retract the statement.

Given Trump's affinity for publicity, it would be welcome.

Earlier this year, Trump suggested he might seek the GOP nomination but ultimately decided against it ? as he has during past elections.

It was around that time that Trump was somewhat marginalized when Obama himself sought to put to rest questions that the Republican had stoked about whether the president was eligible to serve in the White House. Obama released his "long form" birth certificate showing that he was, in fact, born in Hawaii in 1961.

Obama also suggested that Trump could be lumped in with "side shows and carnival barkers," and he used his appearance at the White House Correspondents Dinner to mock Trump, who was sitting in the audience glowering.

Despite that, Trump tried to stoke the "birther" issue anew Monday, saying on MSNBC: "Whether or not he was born here, you know, to me it means something. I guess it doesn't mean a lot to a lot of people. To me it happens to mean something."

So far, only Gingrich, a former House speaker, has committed to attend the Dec. 27 debate.

Huntsman said he wouldn't be there. "I'm not going to kiss his ring and I'm not going to kiss any other part of his anatomy," he said.

"This is exactly what is wrong with politics. It's show business over substance," Huntsman said on Fox News.

Paul also planned to skip it, telling CNN that he didn't understand why candidates were seeking Trump's support.

"I didn't know he had the ability to lay on hands and anoint people," Paul said.

Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota have met with Trump. Businessman Herman Cain, who ended his campaign on Saturday, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin also visited with him.

Twilight Trio: Then & Now PHOTOS

Now the Twilight Trio, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner are all super stars. But my, oh, my how far they have come! Let?s take a good look at the trio; now and then! Robert Pattinson When we first saw him in the first Twilight movie, Rob had already starred in a movie with Reese Witherspoon. Ok, not starred. He had an uncredited part in Vanity Fair as the Older Rawdy Crawley. He also played Cedric in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and I have to admit, I was sad when he died! He did a few other made for TV movies and then hit the jackpot with Twilight. Since then he has had lead roles, in silver screen movies. Of course he will forever be remembered as the beloved Edward Cullen, but Remember Me and Water For Elephants are definitely roles he should be proud of. It proved he could be more than Edward. He also has a few upcoming films, Bel Ami and Cosmopolis. Kristen Stewart Okay so this girl says she was an actress long before the Twilight movies made it big, and she was. I just didn?t realize it, even thought she was [...]

Clinton cites serious concerns in Russia voting (AP)

BONN, Germany ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday the U.S. has "`serious concerns" about the conduct of Russia's parliamentary elections.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's party saw its majority in Russia's parliament weaken sharply, according to preliminary election results released Monday.

Some opposition politicians and election monitors said that even a result of around 50 percent for Putin's United Russia party was inflated because of vote fraud. Their claims were backed by international observers, as Clinton noted during remarks in Bonn, Germany.

She said her opinion matters less than that of Russian voters, whom she says deserve the right to know their votes were fairly cast and counted.

Clinton said that international monitors have raised questions about possible ballot-stuffing and manipulation of voter lists "and other troubling practices."

She said Washington is also concerned that internal Russian election monitors were harassed, including by cyber attacks on their web sites.

"Russian voters deserve a full investigation of all credible reports of electoral fraud and manipulation and we hope in particular that then Russian authorities will take action" on reports that come forward, Clinton said.

She said "the Russian people, like people everywhere, deserve the right to have their voices heard and their votes counted. That means they deserve free, fair, transparent elections and leaders who are accountable to them."

She travels next to Lithuania for a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which monitors election fraud.

Icon of US military now in Iraqi hands (AP)

CAMP VICTORY, Iraq ? Inside palace walls built by Saddam Hussein, U.S. generals plotted the war's course, tracked the mounting death toll and swore in new American citizens under gaudy glass chandeliers.

Just outside the palace, American troops whacked golf balls into man-made lakes or fished for carp, while others sat down with a cigar and a can of nonalcoholic beer hoping for a respite from incoming rockets or mortar shells.

Along another lake some distance away, a jailed Saddam tended to tomatoes and cucumbers in a small, walled-off enclosure with guards patrolling overhead.

Ever since the soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division fought their way into the Baghdad airport grounds nearly nine years ago, the sprawling area they renamed Camp Victory has held a special place in the American military experience in Iraq.

From here, the highest-ranking generals sitting behind banks of telephones and video screens communicated with commanders in the field and political leaders in Washington, and dictated strategy that unfolded on the streets of Fallujah, Mosul and Najaf.

It was an intersection in the war where U.S. troops, hot and dusty after traveling across Iraq's deadly roads and highways, could relax with a latte or bootlegged movie before heading back out again.

On Friday, the base that at its height was home to 46,000 people was handed over to the Iraqi government as part of American efforts to move all U.S. troops out of the country by the end of the year.

"The base is no longer under U.S. control and is under the full authority of the government of Iraq," said U.S. military spokesman Col. Barry Johnson. He said that by 2 p.m. on Friday, there was no longer any U.S. troop presence at the base.

The transfer of the country's largest American military base to Iraqi custody happened with little fanfare, and no ceremony was held.

The area, which the military formally calls Victory Base Complex, was originally used as a country club for the Baghdad elite under Saddam. A visitor can still find small relics of that era, such as signs advising patrons where to park, or the hours during which the casino was open.

Saddam built the palace complex near the airport out of embarrassment. During the 1978 Arab League summit he was forced to house incoming dignitaries in private homes in Baghdad because he had no proper accommodations, according to Robert O. Kirkland, a former U.S. military historian who interviewed former Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz and other Iraqis who were once in American custody.

To rectify the problem, Saddam went on a palace-building spree, eventually building nine structures of varying size and impressiveness. He gave some of them names that reflected his often convoluted view of the world: Victory over America, Victory over Iran and Victory over Kuwait.

In the run-up to the war, U.S. military planners were confused by a cone-shaped structure they could see from satellite imagery, said Col. Les Melnyk, another former U.S. military historian in Iraq. They labeled it a possible prayer site. It turned out to be a pigeon coop.

Maj. William Sumner was a captain when his unit arrived at Camp Victory in mid-April 2003. He remembers how Iraqi looters managed to get into the complex and make off with geese, pelicans and other animals from a small zoo Saddam had built.

"I think that's when the cougar got out of the enclosure," he said. For weeks afterward, a large feline, which Sumner said could have also been a bobcat, was spotted wandering around the base.

In the early days after the invasion, soldiers swam in the man-made lakes or toured the islands with paddle boats.

But quickly the atmosphere became more like bases back in the U.S. That meant rules and regulations ? and military police to enforce them. Sumner said during his unit's second week at Victory he was pulled over for speeding.

"After we moved onto our other place, we just tried to refuse to go back there whenever possible," he said.

Victory Base Complex was essentially a city, often hit by rockets or mortar shells. One time the violence came from within. In May 2009, a U.S. soldier shot and killed five fellow troops at a combat stress clinic.

The facility was so big it was divided into sections with different names. Troops could travel from Camp Stryker to Camp Liberty without leaving the base. A public bus system with posted routes transported people to the dining facilities, the gym or a dirt speedway where troops and contractors would race remote-controlled cars.

By the numbers supplied by the U.S. military, it was a substantial operation:

? The incinerators destroyed an average of 178,000 pounds of waste a day.

? A water purification plant produced 1.85 million gallons of water a day.

? A bottled water plant filled 500,000 one-liter bottles a day.

? Three separate plants produced 60 megawatts of power a day.

If soldiers grew tired of food at the massive chow halls, they could grab takeout at Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Cinnabon, Burger King or Subway.

At various stores they could buy anything from illegal DVDs to a Harley Davidson motorcycle delivered straight to their door back in the U.S. when they returned from the war. In the early days of the war, troops could even buy Saddam Hussein's personal silverware and place settings.

Troops and contractors visiting from other bases took tours of the palaces.

One particularly entertaining pastime was feeding the carp in the lake surrounding Al Faw palace, where the top generals and U.S. military officials were based. The aggressive fish would jump out of the water for cereal, Girl Scout cookies and Pop Tarts.

Off-limits to most troops was the jail used to house Saddam and some of his cohorts. In a dilapidated, bomb-damaged building encircled by concertina wire, American troops interrogated and guarded the former dictator before he was handed over to the Iraqis and executed in 2006.

The Iraqi government has not yet announced plans for the complex, prime real estate in a country sorely lacking in parks and public spaces. The Iraqi military is already using some parts, and there is talk of turning Saddam's jail cell into a museum.

Sprint pledges support to Clearwire (AP)

NEW YORK ? Sprint Nextel Corp. is mending fences with independent subsidiary Clearwire Corp., pledging Thursday to use the data network Clearwire is planning to build and to participate if the company raises more capital.

The announcement is a lifeline for Clearwire, which is struggling financially. It's using a network technology called WiMax that has been bypassed by all phone companies except Sprint, and lacks the funding to upgrade to the industry's standard technology.

Clearwire shares climbed 29 cents, or 16 percent, to $2.07 in afternoon trading. Earlier in the day, the stock was up as much as 37 percent. The stock has been very volatile this year, as investors have followed the blow-by-blow of Clearwire's tempestuous relationship with Sprint.

Sprint's commitment is "foundational in terms of helping us accelerate our progress," Clearwire CEO Erik Prusch said in an interview.

Overland Park, Kan.-based Sprint owns 54 percent of Kirkland, Wash.-based Clearwire, but doesn't have voting control. Sprint now resells access to Clearwire's WiMax network as "Sprint 4G."

Two months ago, Sprint made clear that it had no plans to keep selling WiMax-compatible devices after the end of next year, and it said nothing about using the new network Clearwire is planning. That sent Clearwire shares crashing.

On Thursday, Sprint said it will collaborate with Clearwire Corp. on building the new network and expects to sell phones that can use it, starting in 2013. It will pay up to $350 million in advance for network capacity if Clearwire meets certain buildout goals.

Clearwire will still need more funding for the network. Sprint said it would participate in a share offering, buying shares worth up to $347 million to maintain its stake in the company.

Also Thursday, Clearwire said it's made $237 million in interest payments that were due Thursday on its debt. The Wall Street Journal had reported two weeks ago that the company was considering whether to delay the payments.

Sprint also said it's paying Clearwire $926 million for unlimited use of its WiMax network in 2012 and 2013, and intends to establish a usage-based contract for 2014 and beyond.

Sprint is upgrading its own network to use the same technology Clearwire is planning to use, dubbed LTE, for Long-Term Evolution. It has also struck a deal to collaborate with privately funded startup LightSquared on its LTE network. That network, however, is being held up by concerns that it will interfere with GPS navigation devices.

Given that Sprint is building its own network, analysts believe it will minimize Clearwire's role over time, despite Thursday's announcement. That leaves "Clearwire's strategic role in doubt long-term," said Michael Nelson at Mizuho Securities.

Prusch said Clearwire is looking for other customers for its LTE network. He didn't mention any by name, but analysts have speculated that T-Mobile USA could be a partner, since it doesn't have the spectrum for its own network.

Sprint shares dipped a penny to $2.70.

New Line Gets Shakin' with San Andreas: 3D

Image from 2012 movie

They say there?s no such thing as ?earthquake weather,? but yesterday?s gale force winds in southern California could certainly seem like a precursor to something ominous ? let?s just hope they?re heralding the arrival of San Andreas: 3D and not a real life killer quake.

The film, which is being developed by New Line, is another in a long line of disaster-based epics like 2012. Veteran writer Allen Loeb has been hired to pen the script, which will focus on a man trying to reconcile with his estranged wife and children in the wake of a massive quake along the San Andreas fault line. Reportedly, the trembler is so massive that the effects extend to Vegas and beyond, making the main character?s trek from SoCal to San Francisco quite daunting.

Loeb has no previous disaster film experience, but he did write the script for the long-delayed Escape From New York remake. While the story in San Andreas: 3D doesn?t sound much different from countless other disaster flicks in recent years, but thanks to advances in effects technology and our inherent love of watching people overcome gigantic obstacles, these films continue to do big business. 2012, for example, earned over $750 million dollars worldwide. Will San Andreas reach the same lofty financial heights? Only time will tell.

Manning's doctor says fusion has healed firmly (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Peyton Manning will increase the intensity of his workouts though he has not yet been cleared to practice.

In a statement released by the Colts on Thursday night, Dr. Robert Watkins says the fusion performed on Manning's neck has achieved "firm fixation."

When Manning last spoke to reporters about his health, a month ago, he was still waiting for that to take place.

"I am encouraged with what Doc had to say," Manning said. "I am happy that I can increase my rehabilitation program as outlined by him ... and the Colts' medical staff. I am hopeful for continued progress in this next phase of my rehab."

Manning's latest neck surgery on Sept. 8 was his third in 19 months and the most complex. He has not been able to practice since, but the Colts (0-11) have kept him on the active roster in hopes he could start throwing passes later this month.

Watkins says it's believed Manning will continue to heal.

"X-ray and CT examination of the surgical area shows that the fusion performed in September has achieved firm fixation," Watkins said. "Peyton will now be allowed to increase the intensity and breadth of his workouts as tolerated. There remains every indication that his recovery will continue.

"There still is no timetable for Peyton's return to practice, which is one of many steps in his expected return to game action. He is working hard on a rehabilitation program. ... His response to this plan in the future will dictate his return date."

The Colts have fallen apart without Manning, who had never missed a game since being drafted No. 1 overall in 1998. His streak of 227 consecutive starts, including playoffs, ended when he missed the season opener at Houston.
