engagement motivation

To succeed in the years to come, we need to rethink business strategy.? Many organizations have reworked processes and systems to the limit.? It seems that all too often human factors are only considered when competitive pressures, resistance to major change, low productivity, absenteeism and other attitudinal symptoms have already taken hold and are notably impacting the bottom line.? Yet optimism and employee mindset are critical to long-term organizational success.

?

Incumbent on business leaders is the need to ensure teams deliver on their promises.? But leaders cannot deliver the results alone.? Teams are needed to deliver consistently.? In order for teams to deliver they must collaborate and work well together to be truly productive!? Are your teams delivering all they can?

?

Recent surveys indicate the average employee brings only 5 to 10% of his/her capacity to work.? What is your organization missing out on?? What is the effect on your bottom line?

?

Ample evidence confirms the present system is not functioning optimally.? Business as usual is not likely to deliver extraordinary and positive results with any regularity.? Television and front pages of the globe?s news and business journals report corruption and missed forecasts, downsizing, mergers, fraud, failed businesses and layoffs ? all indicators of the system?s malfunction.? The current situation is not sustainable.

?

Our ever-changing business world requires a new working model to thrive.

We need a more effective way to create and maintain great organizations able to operate at optimum productivity, to retain and grow top people and to flourish in our dynamic multi-faceted world.? Peaceful Productivity is the solution.

?

The time is NOW.? This is a Call to Action!

VII.? Summary and Call to Action

I. The Challenge

As a leader you are in a privileged position to inspire and activate people to commit themselves to a common context.? You are expected to stand up as a role model for others to follow.? Clarity of vision, choice of personal strategies, confidence in decision-making and follow-through nurture the trust people have in you.? Personal power and mastery are required to meet these important challenges.? Consistency, commitment and concentrated focus are essential.

Yet change is everywhere. It is hitting us from every angle ? social change, financial change, legislative change, political change, and above all technological change.? This leaves most of us in a state of recurring uncertainty.? How can an individual leader maintain balance in such a sea of change?? Are you prepared for the challenge?? Will your current management philosophy thrive in tomorrow?s climate?? And how can you do all of this with ease, grace and a sense of inner peace?

?

?The most sought-after treasure in the world ? even more than wealth and power ? is peace of mind,? Salzman1 writes. ?This state of peace is something that is naturally ours.? So why do so many of us seek what is already ours? ?People take the small, mechanical aspect of their mind to be the real mind when it is just a small part of the infinite space of the naturally peaceful mind.?

(1 Bertram W. Salzman, academy-award winning director and author)

II. Current Situation & Trends - Why NOW?

Today?s fast-paced ever-changing business environment is stretching resources ever thinner.? More and more people are suffering from burn out and stress related diseases.? Absenteeism, heart attack, stroke, depression and diminished concentration are on the rise.

These all too common causes of stress and consequent employee ?check outs? are prevalent in many workplaces?

  • organizational change
  • poor communication
  • lack of training
  • inadequate supervision
  • monotonous work
  • lack of promotion prospects
  • bullying & harassment
  • unclear roles
  • excessive hours
  • conflict of work and home demands

?

The resulting loss of productivity is significant.? This enormous loss within organizations can be measured in terms of:

?

  • increasing client complaints
  • more accidents
  • increased staff turnover
  • lost sales / lost customers
  • poor morale & absenteeism
  • deteriorating product quality
  • and direct costs?

?

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing business leaders today is management of the structure of costs. Human resource costs are significant, not only in terms of salaries and social charges but also in ?hidden? costs.

Certain direct and indirect costs can totally escape usual accounting practices. Absenteeism is a case in point, where direct costs of salaries and social benefits and indirect costs relative to overtime and replacement are not attributed.? In the category ?absenteeism? alone, sums are considerable. Industry analysts estimate the annual costs to be $30 billion in the United States and $14 billion in Canada, or $80 000 a year per capita.

The message is clear.? If it?s a crisis in the business world, then clearly stress at work does not end at the office. As noted by Harvard Business Review, ?When an executive experiences worry, tension, fear, doubt or stress intensely, he is not able to shake these feelings when he gets home, and they render him psychologically unavailable for a rich private life.

We can summarize our findings this way: for an ambitious person, a well functioning professional life is a necessary though not sufficient condition for a well functioning private one.? Executives need intense physical activity not further mental strain and fatigue.? Managers who are burning out need support from others who can offer psychological sustenance.? ~ Harvard Business Review.

With growing pressures today, many people attempt to balance work/life by dividing time between personal and professional activities.? We have all heard, ?I leave my ?personal self? at home when I go to work.?? This creates disengagement and loss of personal power.? The resulting productivity drops dramatically.? Where the ?average? employee brings only 5 ? 10% capacity to the workplace, ?checking out? is rampant. ?No wonder businesses are struggling and the number of individuals suffering from stress is rising.

Remarkably, companies such as Xerox Corp. estimate costs $1.5 million to replace a top executive who dies prematurely from heart disease.?? Heart disease is often linked to stress.? In addition to the negative impact of stress-related issues in management, it is clear that poor management practices also kill productivity.

?Poor management? practices are lowering productivity rates and costing global economies billions, according to Proudfoot Consulting?s international labor productivity study. The study, Managing for Mediocrity2, names the six barriers to optimum productivity?

  • insufficient planning and control
  • inadequate supervision
  • ineffective communication
  • poor working morale
  • inappropriately qualified workforce
  • IT-related issues

(2 ?New study finds poor management practices cost economies billions.?? Compiled by Lauren Nypaver, Proudfoot Consulting, UK)

So what are the implications? Peace of mind in the workplace has been eroded by spiraling stress related-issues and poor management practices.?? It?s time for a catalytic change in the way we engage with others at work!? The Way to P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? is to adopt a Business Success Strategy for peace of mind and extraordinary results.

III. Business Success Strategy to Unleash Motivation for Inspired Performance, Extraordinary Results and Peace of Mind

A healthy life/work balance enriches peace of mind. Starting from a place of inner harmony, we gain the perspective of the ?big picture.?? Without this holistic viewpoint, we have little chance to recognize our contribution and meaning in the overall organization.? We remain isolated and not connected to the whole.? Planned results are not guaranteed in this isolated and unbalanced state.

?

From personal experience, we know we are most productive and motivated when we are doing something we enjoy ? producing or creating something meaningful and in alignment with our personal values.

?

Connecting with others in a consequential way, authentically aligned with our personal values and organization goals, allows us to create and operate at maximum levels. The secret to personal performance lies in the ability to unlock motivation.? Motivated employees are able to sustain significant increases in productivity.

What can tomorrow?s business leaders do to increase productivity for both the long and short term and bring more peace and satisfaction to the office?? What could you do if you tripled the capacity & productivity of your people?? And what if were sustainable? Peaceful Productivity? offers a viable solution.

P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? is about engaging individuals and teams around a common goal while supporting peaceful activities and increasing productivity.? P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? works for the betterment of all relationships ? the relationship with our inner self, our relationships with other and our relationship with the world we live in.

?

IV. The Three Building Blocks of P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity?

  1. 1. PERSONAL PEACE? PLAN

?P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity?? begins with and nourishes our peace of mind ? our inner harmony.? Attaining peace of mind is the first building block of Peaceful Productivity?.? This is the INDIVIDUAL or personal element.? This is your Personal Peace Plan.

Philosophers, spiritual leaders and writers over the ages have prescribed a myriad of methods and suggestions for attaining peace of mind.? Peace of mind is the integration of one?s true self in harmony with the reality of the outside world ? an alignment of personal values with actions ? a personal alignment with one?s basic nature.

As philosopher Socrates said, ?Know yourself.??? Know your values, your goals and your purpose.? Clearly define your vision.? This is the starting point.

For an organization this Personal Peace Plan becomes a framework within which the team operates.? As the environment changes, the Plan provides the basis to make decisions and define appropriate future actions.? It is a governance plan within which teams can innovate and act while remaining consistent with the group?s Personal Peace Plan.

Inner peace calms the torrent of thoughts that borage us each moment of each day.? Plain and simple, yet rare!? We all recognize this peaceful feeling when we are ?in the zone? or ?in the flow.?? With inner peace, we are optimistic.? We approach situations in terms of how to find solutions rather than to worry what can go wrong.? Self-efficacy rises and productivity improves.? P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? helps more people bring peace of mind to work.

Yet peace of mind seems to be a state we rarely seek at work.? I believe this must change.? Without peace of mind at work, we risk everything.

?I must first be the change I want to see in the world.?
? Mahatma Gandhi

?

2.? PURPOSEFUL ACTION ? CONNECTING WITH OTHERS

The second element of P e a c e f u l ??Productivity? is Purposeful Action and Connecting with Others.? With your Personal Peace Plan in mind, define an action plan with purpose.? This element is CO-ACTIVE.? With purposeful action we can transform the workplace into a source of immense satisfaction and fulfillment and at the same time deliver sustainable results.? With a spirit of cooperation we are more productive and creative.

Develop a six- to twelve-month plan to deliver your vision and a 100-day action plan to kickstart the process. Both long-term and short-term aspects are essential.? Initiating action is important to set the process in motion.? And not just any action ? P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? prescribes Action with Purpose, aligned with your Personal Peace Plan.

Not indeed as the product, but as the producing power, the productivity. - Coleridge.

  1. 3. COLLABORATING for SUSTAINABLE RESULTS

This third step is manifested by the combination of the first two steps ? Collaborating for Sustainable Results.?? To yield sustainable results, commit to your plan, build your self-confidence, review and modify your action plan as you learn along the way, be committed to consistency in your words and actions and ? very important ? enjoy the process.? Through strong relationship with others, more is possible with less effort and less stress.

Living in and acting from a state of balance and inner peace we become ?grounded,? self-confident and consistent.? Consistent in that we live according to the same values in all aspects of life ? whether at home or work, alone or with friends, family, community or with nature.? Integrity-of-self emerges when we operate from this state of balance. And productivity improves because stress is reduced.? In this way both the individual and the organization benefit.?? A strong collaborative partnership is created.

Your reward is enriching work that ?fits? your unique talents and skills, which brings increased self-confidence and the ultimate: peace of mind.

P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? creates a richly rewarding system generating greater peace of mind for individuals while producing planned and sustainable results.

?

V. Benefits & Return on Investment (ROI)

Raising productivity improves economic performance ? a widely accepted fact among businesses, organizations and governments.? Again referencing Proudfoot Consulting?s article Managing for Medocrity2, the main causes of reduced productivity are 1) insufficient management planning and control, and 2) inadequate employee supervision.? Poor management, defined as a combination of these two barriers to productivity, continues to be the largest single reason for productivity loss.

The evidence is clear.? Companies with the highest management scores outperform their peers ? in both short-term and long-term financial results.? The correlation between good management practices and economic performance is confirmed.? People are any organization?s greatest asset.? Peaceful Productivity? ?shows how to tap into this valuable human resource in a productive and sustainable way.

In Bradford Smart?s ?Topgrading? 3, he notes that ?average? total costs associated with ?typical? mis-hires was?about 24 times the person?s base compensation.? The economic loss of mis-hiring can reach negative ROI?s of over 500%.? Organizations simply cannot afford such losses.?? (3 Topgrading: How Leading Companies Win by Hiring, Coaching, and Keeping the Best People? Bradford D. Smart, Ph.D.)

?

Sustainable results derive more naturally from purposeful actions and enhance peace of mind.? It is that simple!

?

?

Leading with P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? provides practical, insightful ways to lead happier and more productive lives ? as individuals and together in teams.? A number of measures are influenced by peaceful working conditions.? Dignity, meaning and community are key motivators for workers, rather than time cards, piecework measures, Six Sigma, and the like.

?

While efficiency might benefit from Six Sigma, Lean or other process-driven methods, the employee is not motivated by such measures or pressures when applied in isolation.? Understanding the overall significance of one?s work and why each individual?s work is important to the whole makes the dominant difference in quality and output. Motivation is key to engage employees and to enhance their productivity.? It is engaging the imagination of individuals that engages one?s emotion.? And it is emotion rather than logic that moves the will.

?

?Imagination is more important than knowledge.? ? Albert Einstein

?

VI. Business Model for Success ? peace @work

One objective of P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? is to integrate the personal and professional lives of workers for greater personal and organizational success.
P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? builds the best match between social and technical systems. Purposeful Collaboration creates and enhances peace @work.

?

Attitude makes the difference.? With peace of mind, personal productivity has a profound basis upon which to flourish.? We gain balance and perspective.?? We act with compassion and integrity, kindness and generosity.? We trust life and those around us.? We are optimistic.? Meaningful collaboration becomes a way of life.? Things just seem to work better!? We maintain peace of mind. And financial results improve.? We experience a better life and a better world.

VII. Summary and Call to Action

P e a c e f u l? ?Productivity? can help you and your organization build the bridge to greater fulfillment and satisfaction both personally and professionally.? Can you guess which star sign I am?

I?m a sensitive guy, who hates confrontation. I much prefer to sort out my problems by discussing them. However over smaller matters I can be very argumentative, especially around people I know well. I?m often confident that my opinion is right, and though if someone tries to prove me wrong I can get a little ticked off I often think it over and admit I?m wrong, though it may sometimes take a while. I love my friends and family but often prefer solitary pursuits, preferring the company of my iPod whilst gardening to all out social engagement. Whilst no alcoholic I drink often. I?m intelligent but I will sometimes get bursts of motivation and achieve things I often feel surprised about. I enjoy being single when I?m single, and being with someone when I?m with someone, but think little of the other while I?m in the other state. Whilst I dream of being rich I have no real love of material possessions.

Gold surge draws prospectors, thieves worldwide (Reuters)

TOKYO/BANGKOK (Reuters) ? It has been called the saint-seducing metal, with good reason.

As the price of gold rests near record highs, people from Spokane to Bangkok are selling jewelry or buying bullion, some are giving up steady jobs to take to panning while theft of gold chains and watches is on the rise worldwide.

"Panning for gold is becoming a real family affair, more popular now because of the gold price," says Cordell Kent, who sells do-it-yourself mining equipment in the 19th century Australian gold rush town of Ballarat.

"Some people I know are making hundreds, even thousands of dollars on the weekends."

Locals say rising prices and heavy rain earlier this year are leading to a surge in amateur prospectors, looking for flakes of gold washing up on river-beds.

"We're seeing a whole new gold rush now around Ballarat," Kent says.

Spot gold sells now for $1,830 an ounce, up nearly a third this year. With currencies and stocks faltering and prices of other commodities held back by slowing economic growth, the frenzy for gold has gone global.

Many are cashing in on the gold they have at home -- or on gold teeth -- although the trend is slowing in the belief prices will rise further.

"The most disgusting thing I had to deal with was a rotten tooth with a gold crown from a customer's grandmother who died," said Munehiro Otsuki, the manager of a gold store in the Shinjuku district of western Tokyo.

He also had a customer seeking to sell half a dozen Buddha statues which he had thought were gold, but were in fact brass.

"When I called him this week after the evaluation, I could tell by the way his voice changed that he was extremely disappointed. He never came back."

At another store in the Kanda district of Tokyo, manager Kenta Okiyama spoke of a middle-aged woman dressed in brand-name clothes, the smell of her expensive perfume wafting across the store, who poured 30 rings of varying designs out on the table in front of her.

She told Okiyama these were rings she had received from ex-husbands and boyfriends back in the heyday of the 1980s, Japan's free-spending "bubble economy" era.

"When I showed her the 200,000 yen ($2,630) on the calculator screen, the expression on her face changed in a way I will never forget," Okiyama said. "She became so happy and smiled, saying 'I'll take it right now.'"

Ritsuko Aoki, a 40-year-old Tokyo housewife, said she was selling old jewelry to buy domestic appliances.

"We did not even think that my old gold accessories were worth anything before we saw news about people selling their gold on TV," she said. "If gold prices rise more, I'll look for more accessories in the depths of my closet."

VOLATILITY, HEDGING

But experts say sales of recycled gold will rise only about 5 percent this year, against 30 percent in 2009. "Either people are waiting till the price hits $2,000 or they are running out," says Mariabi Peenya, a street side dealer in New York's Diamond District.

Nevertheless, canny investors see opportunities in gold's price volatility. Although prices have been rising steadily since the start of the year, gold has veered between as low as $1,600 per ounce to as high as $1,900 in August.

And if dealing in physical gold, it's much easier since there are no brokerage fees or delays in payment.

"We bought and sold twice and made a nice tidy sum," says Ivy Mok, a mother of two who lives in Bangkok. "Not very huge because we sold, and then the price went even higher."

She and her husband dealt in small gold bars bought and sold in the well-guarded upstairs rooms of stores in the city's Chinatown district.

"People buy and sell their gold bars right there," Mok said. "But it was very stressful for me because once you are on the streets, you are on your own with all your gold bars and you feel very vulnerable."

Her fears are not unfounded. One of the unsavory sides of gold's price surge has been a matching surge in crimes associated with the metal.

Dubai, Casablanca, Pathanamthitta in southern India, all have been hit by major robberies linked to gold in recent weeks. In Ghana, a gold dealer is being accused of fraud after he alleged he was held up and robbed of gold he had promised to customers.

Snatchings of gold chains are on the increase in London, China, across the United States and many other parts of the globe, but especially in India, which is the world's biggest buyer of gold.

In northern Vietnam, a gold shop owner, his wife and 19-month-old daughter were killed and the shop robbed 10 days ago in one of the most violent crimes in the country in years. Another daughter was discovered cowering under a bed with her hand severed.

In France, there were 183 armed robberies of jewelers in the first half of 2011, up from 138 in the year-earlier period, according to OCLCO, a police agency that tackles organized crime.

"If gold is a safe haven for people with savings, it is also becoming it would seem a safe haven for armed robbers," said Frederic Doidy, an officer with OCLCO.

The Perfect Business And Social Networking Community. | I am a ...

Article by Michael J Kohn

Capitalizing on the fastest growing global Internet trend.

The global Internet community continues to grow at an amazing rate. From 70 million people in December of 1997, as reported by International Data Group, to 1,245 million in September of 2007 as forecast by Internet World Stats. Representing a growth from 1.7% of the worlds population to 18.9% in a short span of just 10 years and that?s only the beginning.

In those very few years, the Internet has morphed into a very powerful platform that has changed the way we communicate with each other and the way we do our everyday business. The Internet, as with no other medium, has expanded the International or Global dimension of the world. It has become a universal source of information and business opportunities. For a very low investment, anyone can create a web page for social or business networking. Almost any individual or business, no matter the size or the location, can reach a very large market, socially or for e-commerce, fast and economically.

With that said, it brings us to one of the fastest, if not the fastest, growing segments of the world wide web, business and social networking communities. We?ve all heard of them and many have participated in some, such as MySpace, YouTube, MSN Groups, Blogger and the list goes on and on. If we had all been very smart, had a crystal ball and a few extra shekels laying around, we would have all invested in these companies and retired somewhat the better.

The latest rapidly growing segment of the networking community is online business networking sites. With a global outreach this type of site can reach the ever expanding global populace using the internet, allowing them to connect with virtually any individual or business. Anyone can use networking sites to expand their business while making invaluable contacts world wide and to do some of the easiest, cheapest and smartest form of advertising available.

The latest and maybe the most interesting of the next generation of networking sites is called the gibLink Community, standing for Global Internet Business Community. This new business and social Internet community has incorporated global revenue sharing into the mix so that all of its advertisers/subscribers can have a share of the revenues generated. Now let?s imagine a global Internet community with millions of business people from around the globe, networking and sharing ideas, and now benefiting from a revenue sharing plan. Ponder this: How much is Google worth? You get the picture.

Just launched two weeks ago on October 15th Forbes business magazine had this to say about gibLink:

?On Monday, September 24th the giblink conference call was swamped with over 20,000 people who wanted information.

What if you had had the chance to revenue share with the owners of MySpace, YouTube, GoDaddy or Google? That would be the opportunity of the century!!!!

Now imagine for a moment, a company that could bring all the best elements of these companies under one roof with a primary focus on a business social networking community, designed for small, medium and even home business entrepreneurs around the world to promote, advertise and expand their core business to compete in the global marketplace.?

All in all gibLink has set itself up to be a Global Internet Business community designed to make connections that count and:

* Promote yourself and your business* Create a network of business connections* Promote to new potential customers and like minded people around the globe* Create a network of business connections to refer business to each other* Expose your business to a Global Audience* Publicize and find forthcoming Business and Social Events* Create and announce Blogs, Clubs and Classified Ads* Expand your business to capitalize on the hottest in-demand web services globally* Expose your business to a Global Audience

gibLink is set to change the way people do business and it is the first worldwide collaboration of entrepreneurs from across a very wide business spectrum. We can view gibLink as the next evolution in online business networking or social networking sites designed to aid everyone doing business in a new global business environment.

One of my very favorite sayings applies oh so well to a new global venture such as the gibLink Community: If you do today what you did yesterday, will you be where you want to be tomorrow?

God Bless and Always Remember To Make It A Great Day!!

MEDIchair Tri City combines branding & service to increase sales ...

08.26.2011? Coquitlam, Port Moody & Port Coquitlam, British Columbia ? BC?s Tri City area is very competitive in the Home Medical Equipment sector. to make themselves stand out from the crowd, MEDIchair Tri City owner Hal Mykolaishyn embarked on program in 2010 that was aimed at increasing public awareness of his business and enhancing service to his customers. Combined, the strategy appears to be working as sales are up 20%. ?Our goal from the very beginning of this strategy was not to just be good at what we do ? we want to be great at what we do,? explains Mykolaishyn, ?To accomplish that you have to go beyond the expected.? Using his personal image as part of the branding awareness campaign, Mykolaishyn created distinctive MEDIchair Tri City ads on 41 bus benches and 11 buses that move throughout the Tri City area. He also completely wrapped his three service vans in colourful messaging that grabs the eye. the advertising also ties together with his store?s website www.medichairtricity.com. ?I know the branding side is working,? says Mykolaishyn. ?There isn?t a day that goes by that someone I meet doesn?t recognize me from our public ads.? However, Mykolaishyn is quick to point out that without great customer service, the advertising and branding is meaningless. to that end, MEDIchair Tri City is the preferred vendor with seven local care facilities in the Tri City and Maple Ridge areas where it fixes and maintains equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs for free. in 2011, the company has donated more than $7600 to local organizations including three manual wheelchairs to the Eagle Ridge Foundation and eight wheelchair cushions and cash to the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. ?We also recently hired a music therapist to visit our preferred vendor accounts and provide entertainment for their residents,? adds Mykolaishyn. ?This is not part of any branding exercise. we recognized an important quality of life service that we could provide at no cost to our preferred customers with that will help make a difference for their residents. this is part of our mission to be great at what we do.? On the industry front, Mykolaishyn is also taking a leadership position. He is a Vice-Chair of the Home Medical Dealers Association of BC. the association represents its 50+ dealers and manufactures in various capacities with both provincial and federal ministries. Pretty Little Liars Finale: Is Alison's Killer Finally Revealed? (omg!)

In the Pretty Little Liars summer finale, viewers will finally get some answers about who killed Alison.

"Viewers will feel they're getting insight into the night Alison disappeared and who killed Alison," executive producer Marlene King tells TVGuide.com. "The jaw-dropping moments are those revelations."

But this is Pretty Little Liars, and King adds, "The finale answers more questions than any other finale we've ever done -- but it raises a few big questions."

Is Pretty Little Liars on your Watchlist? Add it and your other favorites now and never miss an episode

Tuesday's episode (8/7c on ABC Family) begins with the last 10 minutes of the episode where the four friends, Aria (Lucy Hale), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) are at the Rosewood police station, covered in dirt. Ironically, when the Pretty Little Liars teaser poster for Season 2 was released, little did viewers know that it would reveal a major plot point from the summer finale. "The poster came first and then we thought, 'How can we get those pretty girls in those pretty dresses dirty?" King says. The episode then flashes back to 12 hours earlier, as the girls arrive at Dr. Sullivan's office to find that she's missing. So does A's text that "The Dr. is out" mean Dr. Sullivan (Annabeth Gish) is a goner?

"Spencer's line about the last time somebody thought she knew A she got hit by a car is very telling about the fate of Dr. Sullivan," King teases. And while it seems hard to believe that a smart woman would work late alone in her office after two break-ins, King adds, "We make it clear that the Pretty Little Liars did not tell her everything about A and withheld a lot of information. If they told her about Hanna getting hit by the car and the more dangerous things, she would've insisted they go to the police. So they told her just enough to make her concerned, but not concerned for her life."

VIDEO: Aria is "officially terrified" of Jason

In other finale developments, Hanna's dad, Tom (Roark Critchlow), gets married, dashing Hanna's hope of seeing her parents back together and linking her to wicked stepsister Kate (Natalie Hall). While King says we will see more of Kate and her mom Isabel in the second half of Season 2, it doesn't necessarily mean it's because the wedding went off without a hitch. "A becomes the ultimate frenemy once again, putting the Pretty Little Liars in a position where she helps them and hurts them simultaneously," King says. "The last thing Hanna wants is her dad to marry Isabel and in a very odd twist of fate, A may help her with that."

See photos from Pretty Little Liars

Look also for the return of a few Rosewood faces. Maya (Bianca Lawson) showed up in the penultimate episode and the finale will define where her and Emily's relationship stands and where it will go. Caleb will return from his trip to California and "Haleb" fans will be happy to hear that King says, "They'll get their share of bliss and you'll see them happy for a while." And finally, there's Officer Darren Wilden (Bryce Johnson), who we last saw in Season 1's "The Perfect Storm." The shady detective is back for the second half of Season 2 after King says, "He regains credibility on the Rosewood police force in the finale." Let's just hope that "credibility" isn't at the expense of one of our PLLs.

Watch a clip from "Over My Dead Body" below:

Make sure to check back after Tuesday's episode when we have the answers to the finale's burning questions.

Smart casting puts Emmy winner in royal role (AP)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? "Designing Women" creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason once wrote that actress Jean Smart's character on the 1980s sitcom had "legs that stretched out for five or six miles, and one of those laughs that made you feel like riding around in a convertible."

Some 25 years later, Smart's girl-next-door looks, legs and laugh are intact, making her casting of Prince Charles's matronly second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, all the more surprising ? except to Smart herself.

"The thing is, I started out in the theater, so I always did all kinds of parts ? all different ages, all kinds of parts," Smart explained recently, while promoting the TV movie "William & Catherine: A Royal Romance," which debuts Saturday night (9 p.m. EDT) on the Hallmark Channel. "And, actually, Camilla was adorable when they were younger."

Smart said she hopes the movie, which follows William and Catherine from introduction to proposal, sheds a new, positive light on Bowles, "the true love of Charles's life," as per Smart. Bowles was widely maligned by the public and press ? especially in the wake of Princess Diana's untimely death in 1997.

"Yes, there are a couple of moments where she has a nice, self-deprecating sense of humor about herself and the fact it's taken a gaggle of stylists to kind of put her together and everything, and it's kind of nice," Smart said. "I really liked the way she was portrayed in the script, and a very sympathetic, likeable character, and I thought she ... deserved that."

The Seattle-born Smart will likely always be best known as Charlene Olivia Frazier Stillfield, the na?ve but huge-hearted office manager at Atlanta's Sugarbaker design firm, on the first five seasons (1986-91) of the sitcom "Designing Women."

"Oh, yeah, it was a great job," Smart recalled. "And we had a blast. And we're all still friends. And we're devastated by losing Dixie."

Costar Dixie Carter died in April 2010 following complications from endometrial cancer. She was just 70.

"Oh, she was something else," Smart noted, with a wistful smile. "And we all (the "Designing Women" leads) went to the funeral in Tennessee, her little hometown in Tennessee. Annie (Potts) and I flew down together. We met Delta (Burke)," Smart then pursed her lips and looked away, unable to continue for a few seconds, but then noting that Carter's husband, actor Hal Holbrook, was "doing pretty well, considering they were inseparable."

Since leaving "Designing Women," Smart has actually enjoyed numerous TV-career highs: two Emmy Awards for guest appearances on "Frasier" (2000, 2001), a key role on the drama "24" in 2006, the year it won the Emmy for drama series, and another of her own Emmys for playing Christina Applegate's self-centered mother in the sitcom "Samantha Who?" (2008).

Smart was killed off in the first-season finale of "Hawaii Five-0" last spring, but admitted flying into Honolulu for her occasional role as Hawaii's governor was no tropical vacation. She said she'd arrive, be up at 4 a.m. to work, and hurry to be back on a plane to Los Angeles to be with her recently adopted toddler, Bonnie. (Smart is married to actor Richard Gilliland, and they also have an adult son, Connor.)

That said, she loved the series' hunk factor, supplied by stars Alex O'Loughlin, Scott Caan and Daniel Dae Kim. "All three of them!" she exclaimed. "I mean Daniel, Daniel Dae Kim. I have this friend. She's this darling, very southern, very Christian, married to a cute doctor, but she said (Smart breaks into a Southern accent), `Oh my god! If I met him, I think I'd just have to lick him. He was wearing those too-tight pants and that bulletproof vest. Oh my god! You worked with him. I'm going to have to lick you the next time I see you,'" she recounted, laughing.

On the horizon for Smart: possibly another play for the 2001 Tony nominee for the comedy "The Man Who Came to Dinner," and a small role in a Meryl Streep film .

"I never was an ingenue," Smart said. "So thank god. If I was, I mean, I can't imagine how depressing that would be right around now. So, in many ways I do feel as if in the last several years I've sort of been in my prime in terms of work and things.

"So, it's fun," Smart continued. "But I do feel fortunate, because I know there's just not much out there at all for women __ (Smart whispers) __ my age."

Smart turns 60 on Sept. 9.

Attitude Is Everything ? popjacket

Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, ?If I were any better, I would be twins!? He was a unique manager because of a moncler outlet. He had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, ?I don?t get it! You can?t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it??
Jerry replied, ?Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ?Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.? I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.?
?Yeah, right, it?s not that easy,? I protested.
?Yes, it is,? Jerry said. ?Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It?s your choice how you live life.?
I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business on moncler. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him.
Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.
I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. He was wear an moncler jacket. When I asked him how he was, he replied, ?If I were any better, I?d be twins. Wanna see my scars?? I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place.
?The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door,? Jerry replied. ?Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live.?
?Weren?t you scared? Did you lose consciousness?? I asked.
Jerry continued, ?The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, ?He?s a dead man.? ?I knew I needed to take action.?
?What did you do?? I asked.
?Well, there was a big, burly nurse shouting questions at me,? said Jerry.
?She asked if I was allergic to anything. ?Yes,? I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ?Bullets!?
Over their laughter, I told them. ?I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.?
Jerry always with his moncler coat, he lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
Attitude, after all, is everything.

Bombs kill 2 in attacks against Iraqi forces (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Bombs killed two people in attacks in two major Iraqi cities Thursday in the latest strike against Iraqi security forces as U.S. troops prepare to leave.

In the first attack, a roadside bomb exploded near an Iraqi army checkpoint in eastern Mosul, police said. One soldier died in the afternoon blast in the city that was once an al-Qaida hotbed.

Al-Qaida's footprint recently has shrunk in Mosul, located 225 miles (360 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad, but the Iraqi wing of the terror group remains focused on thwarting Iraq's government and security forces.

Several hours later, in Baghdad, a car bomb killing one passer-by and wounded 17 other people as an Iraqi army convoy drove by al-Mustansiriya University in a Shiite neighborhood.

A Baghdad policeman said 11 soldiers were among the wounded. Cars parked along the street were also damaged in Thursday's explosion.

The casualties were confirmed by a medic at nearby al-Kindi hospital.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Violence has dropped across Iraq since the days when the country teetered on the brink of civil war just a few years ago, but deadly attacks still happen nearly every day. Iraqi security forces are often targeted by insurgents trying to exploit weaknesses as U.S. troops prepare to leave the country by the end of December, as required under a 2008 security agreement.

However, U.S. and Iraqi officials are negotiating whether to keep some American troops in Iraq next year to help bring stability to its government and security forces.

Fruit Grower's Reality Check :: Home Improvement DIY

When it comes to fruit growing and pests, you may want to give your approach a reality check with respect to the time, money, and energy you?re willing to devote to scouting for pests, spraying, and most important, carrying out all the cultural practices that will help you avoid spraying in the first place.

Home gardeners may find it more difficult and expensive to grow high-quality tree fruit than small-fruit plants, such as strawberries, grapes, blueberries, and brambles. One reason is that many different pests and diseases plague tree fruits. Summer rainfall and high humidity favor the growth and spread of disease-causing organisms. Insects are also challenging.

Power spray equipment isn?t practical for a small planting, yet getting spray into the canopy of a large fruit tree is a challenge. Dwarf fruit trees offer one solution for the home gardener because pesticides can be applied with hand-operated spray equipment.

But you?ll still need to be on your toes, scouting faithfully for insect presence, noting changes that occur on the leaves and the growing fruits, and keeping track of the weather so you?re able to time your sprayings accordingly. Most cooperative extension services have home fruit production guides and Web sites that provide the specific information home gardeners need to grow fruit crops successfully.

Simpson wins Wyndham for 1st PGA Tour title (AP)

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Webb Simpson grew up in North Carolina, and his favorite memory of the Wyndham Championship was caddying for Neal Lancaster as a teenager during a pro-am.

That might change now that he's won the tournament.

Simpson claimed his first PGA Tour title Sunday, shooting a 3-under 67 to win by three strokes.

The 26-year-old Raleigh native finished at 18-under 262 and collected $936,000 in the tournament about a 30-mile drive from the Wake Forest campus where he was a college star.

"I really couldn't think of a better place to win than here in Greensboro," Simpson said.

George McNeill (64) was at 15 under, with Tommy Gainey (69) another stroke back in the final event before the PGA Tour playoffs.

Carl Pettersson (69), Vijay Singh (65), Jerry Kelly (65), Kyung-tae Kim (66) and Charles Howell III (67) finished at 13 under at Sedgefield Country Club.

Simpson said his first visit to the Greensboro-based tournament came when he was 16. His father brought him to the event's former home across town at Forest Oaks Country Club to caddie for Lancaster during the Wednesday pro-am.

"That was probably the most fun 18 holes I've ever been a part of," Simpson said.

His final 18 of this tournament were marked by steady, bogey-free play and a strong finish marked by consecutive birdies on Nos. 15 and 16.

After taking the lead during Round 3 with a late five-hole stretch of four birdies and an eagle, Simpson opened his final round with eight straight pars before moving to 16 under with a birdie on the par-4 ninth.

He stayed there until late in the day. Birdies on the par-5 15th and the par-3 16th gave him a three-shot lead with two holes to go.

"When I made the putt on 15, I asked my caddie for the first time all day, `Where do we stand?' and he said, `We're two ahead right now,'" Simpson said. "I knew I needed to play solid golf on the last three holes, and to birdie 16 was so huge. ... I knew I had a three-shot lead on 18, and as soon as I hit the ball in play, I knew it was probably over."

McNeill made a late charge, with the former Florida State player moving to 15 under with a birdie on No. 17, his sixth birdie of the round. But all he could do after that was hope for a few late bogeys from Simpson.

"Honestly, I thought it was going to be a lot lower," McNeill said of the winning score. "I can only control myself. I can't control what everybody else does. I'm very happy with the way I hit it, the way I played, the way I putted."

Several players with strong Atlantic Coast Conference ties played pivotal roles during the fourth round at the country club where the ACC was founded in 1953 ? and in a college-centric region where school ties run deep.

Simpson was the ACC's player of the year for the Demon Deacons in 2008. McNeill was an all-conference player for the Seminoles in the late 1990s.

And Pettersson grew up in Greensboro, played at North Carolina State, serves on this tournament's board of directors, won it in 2008 and made the daily 70-mile commute from his home in Raleigh.

"I'm disappointed. I'm a competitor," Pettersson said. "I wanted to win this one badly, but Webb outplayed us all."

Pettersson turned in perhaps the most remarkable birdie of the tournament on the par-4 first hole. After sending his drive well wide of the fairway and into a flower pot, he wound up chipping in from about 55 feet.

Gainey, a South Carolina native known as "Tommy Two Gloves" because he wears them on both hands, led or shared the lead after each of the first two rounds. After falling off the pace with two bogeys and a double bogey midway through the round, he reeled off four consecutive birdies on Nos. 12-15 to climb back in it.

The focus this week wasn't solely on the leaders, but on the names moving up and down the FedEx Cup points list.

The Wyndham annually marks the last chance for players to claim spots in the playoffs, and some big names came to Greensboro hoping to play their way in.

Padraig Harrington, who called off a family vacation so he could try to escape the playoff bubble, finished at 6 under and jumped from No. 130 to No. 124. The top 125 qualify for The Barclays later this week in New Jersey.

Ernie Els, who entered at No. 126, made it into the playoff field despite shooting a final-round 72. His 8 under finish pushed him to 118th.

"You don't know in these playoffs," Els said. "I've got to play good golf though. I played really good the first two days. I'd like to get that back."

Among those who didn't make it: Justin Leonard missed a 13-foot putt on the 18th, and that left him at No. 126.

"To try and wait until this week to make it through is just ? you know," Leonard said. "I mean, come on. I had 25 other weeks to play like this."

Boomer Sooner! Oklahoma No. 1 in AP Top 25

(AP) ? Being voted preseason No. 1 is a tradition at Oklahoma, and this season is no different.

The Sooners will start out top-ranked in The Associated Press college football poll for the 10th time, more than any program in the country.

The defending Big 12 champions received 36 of 60 first-place votes and 1,464 points in the Top 25 released Saturday.

Auburn, last season's national champion, will start the season No. 23, one spot behind where it began in 2010.

If the rankings are any indication, the national title race could be a scramble.

No. 2 Alabama, one of a record eight Southeastern Conference teams in the preseason poll, wasn't far behind OU, receiving 17 first-place votes and 1,439 points.

No. 3 Oregon got four first-place votes, No. 4 LSU received one and No. 5 Boise State got two.

Florida State was No. 6, the Seminoles' best preseason ranking since starting the 2004 season at No. 5.

Heisman Trophy favorite Andrew Luck and Stanford were No. 7.

Rounding out the top 10 are Oklahoma's Big 12 rivals, Texas A&M (No. 8) and Oklahoma State (No. 9), and Nebraska (No. 10), in its first season in the Big Ten after leaving the Big 12.

No. 16 Notre Dame is ranked for the first time since early November 2009.

As for Oklahoma, no matter where it lands in the preseason, it always expects to make a run at a national championship in the end. It hasn't won it all, however, since 2000.

That's when coach Bob Stoops led the Sooners to their seventh AP national title in his second season in Norman. Since then, Oklahoma has lost three BCS championship games.

The Sooners have won the AP national title four times when they were preseason No. 1 (1956, 1974, 1975 and 1985). The last time they started a season top-ranked was 2003. That season, they lost the BCS championship game to LSU.

"We're very matter of fact," Stoops said this week. "All we think about is doing the work.

"We're also very aware we're not much different than about 12, 15 other teams that'll be competing for it that have legitimate chances to win it. What are we going to do differently to separate ourselves?"

Having the combination of quarterback Landry Jones and receiver Ryan Broyles is a good place to start.

Jones passed for 4,718 yards and 38 touchdowns last season, his second as a starter, and Broyles was his favorite target. The senior had 131 catches for 1,622 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Jones was forced into a starting role two years ago as a redshirt freshman when Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford went down with a shoulder injury. That was a tough season for the Sooners, who started ranked third but finished it 8-5.

Bradford was one of several key players Oklahoma lost to an injury that season, and Jones wasn't the only underclassman who played a bigger role than expected.

"Now two years from that they have benefited from the maturity and the experience gained from being on the field at an early age," Stoops said. "Our (offensive) line was young and now two years later they've got experience and some maturity to them. Same with Landry Jones. Same with Ryan Broyles."

Earlier this month, Sooners fans must have had flashbacks to Bradford's injury when linebacker and leading tackler Travis Lewis hurt his left foot in practice. He likely will miss at least the first four games, including a road trip to Florida State on Sept. 17.

"It's a big blow to us, there is no denying it," Stoops said.

Oklahoma has also been coping with the death of linebacker Austin Box, a would-be starter who overdosed on prescription painkillers in May.

"He's very close to so many guys and ... it wouldn't be right to brush it to the side," defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "We're trying to move forward and deal with it as best we can."

The SEC has won five straight BCS title games and has plenty of candidates to make it six.

"We want to come out and win a national championship, to be undefeated," Alabama safety Mark Barron said. "Every time we step out on the field, one of our motivating factors is to be special."

South Carolina (No. 12), Arkansas (No. 15), Georgia (No. 19), Mississippi State (No. 20) and Florida (No. 22) give the SEC more teams in the preseason poll than any previous conference.

The Big Ten placed four teams in the rankings with Wisconsin (No. 11), Michigan State (No. 17) and Ohio St. (No. 18) joining Nebraska.

With No. 21 Missouri, the Big 12 had four teams, too.

The Pac-12 had three teams, with No. 25 Southern California joining Oregon and Stanford.

The Atlantic Coast Conference placed two teams (Florida State and No. 13 Virginia Tech), as did the Mountain West Conference (Boise State and No. 14 TCU)

The Big East, which finished last season with no ranked teams, had one team in the preseason poll, No. 24 West Virginia.

Notable by its absence is Texas. Coming off a 5-7 season, the Longhorns are missing from the preseason Top 25 for the first time since 1998.

For now, ranked or not, every team is chasing Oklahoma.

"Who doesn't want to be No. 1?" Sooners cornerback Jamell Flemming said.
