How McCartney and football helped Liverpool in China

Los Angeles, CA (July 29th, 2011) The city of Liverpool made a bold move in investing in exhibiting at the 2010 World Expo in its twin city of Shanghai, China. According to research in the journal Local Economy published by SAGE, the city is beginning to reap the benefits both of inward investment, and of a higher profile in, and strengthened relationships with China.

Liverpool was the only city in the UK to take the decision to promote itself at the 2010 World Expo, in the economically dynamic city of Shanghai, in a country whose economy is growing faster than any other, China.

During the 184 days that Liverpool's pavilion was open it welcomed more than 770,000 visitors, and on its busiest day (22 October), it saw 8934 visitors. The Liverpool pavilion received just over one percent of Expo's total 73.08m visitors.

Liverpool University spin out design company Uniform created the pavilion to include a wall of music, football from Liverpool and Everton football clubs including the opportunity for guests to have a photo taken with soccer stars past and present, and a welcome from Sir Paul McCartney. The 'Macca message' was one of more than 80 films created by Liverpool's River Motion Group and preceded an introductory 3-D film featuring a Chinese dragon and a Liver Bird soaring above Liverpool.

Within a week Liverpool had been voted Best City Pavilion in the Urban Practice Area by visitors during the testing phase. It was recognized through four Urban Best Practice Area Expo prizes: Model City Pavilion Award; Best Operations Management Award; Best Worker Award; and Golden Host Award.

"We delivered a magnificent statement on our heritage, our assets and our future on behalf of the city, the region, the North West and all our sponsors," according to Liverpool Vision's Deputy Chief Executive, Mike Taylor.

Ninety-nine percent of visitors said that they would recommend the Liverpool pavilion to a friend. Critically, most visitors knew little about the area before visiting but left with a very positive view - 98 percent of visitors would consider visiting Liverpool after visiting the pavilion, 80 percent would consider it a good place to study and 71 percent would consider doing business in the city.

Expo stimulated local firms to broaden their trade horizons and look to China for future growth: 30 percent of sponsors said that they would not have participated in any international business activity in 2010 without Liverpool's participation in the Expo. China would now feature in 75 percent of sponsors' companies' business plans for the next year. Twelve percent of sponsors had already secured sales or orders as a result of participating, and around 70 percent of sponsors agreed or strongly agreed that their involvement will generate sales/orders in the future in the 100,000 to 1m range.

The lead sponsor, The Peel Group, has already begun development of an International Trade Centre to attract Chinese firms on the Wirral side of the Mersey. Liverpool has also now opened a business embassy in London and Liverpool City Council is to appoint an investment and business manager in Shanghai to build and expand upon the World Expo experience.

Liverpool has also signaled its determination to develop more Chinese trade opportunities with the just-announced launch of the Liverpool in China network aimed at building on Liverpool's presence at World Expo. A new trade mission to Shanghai in October will focus on the city's creative and digital sectors.

Mr Taylor said: "It is vital that our momentum is maintained. Many organizations have already forged important links. We know the opportunities are there on an unparalleled scale and we need to do all we can to maximize them. This trade mission answers the Chinese desire to cooperate with overseas companies as they develop their cultural and creative industries and we have the expertise and skills to share. We are also developing a tourism strategy that will be aimed at ensuring Liverpool corners its share of this burgeoning Chinese market. Additionally Liverpool is appointing a chief representative in Shanghai, demonstrating our long term commitment to our sister city partnership."

Home to Europe's oldest Chinese community, Liverpool had longstanding links with China. In 1999 a twinning arrangement was made with Shanghai followed by a Memorandum of Understanding in 2007. Liverpool was then invited to bid for the World Expo with the theme 'Better City, Better Life'. During 2008 Liverpool was European Capital of Culture, and it also received news its bid for Expo for 2010 had succeeded.

Liverpool's rise to pre-eminence in the 19th century was built on strong international relationships, so it seems prescient that the city is today forging stronger links with China. The city's aims included exploiting its strong, international and instantly recognizable brand to forge global trading, investment and knowledge relationships as the west coast's sea and air gateway.

The challenges of showcasing the city 6000 miles away included justification of the risk, financing the project (estimated to cost around 3 billion) and how to encapsulate the city's highlights into a 30-minute pavilion experience that was lively, unexpected, entertaining, informative and most importantly memorable.

Consultants Scott Wilson suggested that the economic benefits to Liverpool and its region would be anywhere from 5.5m to 47.5m over ten years, from Chinese students and tourists as well as from increased exports and direct foreign investment. Funding for the pavilion came from the North West Development Agency (1.25m) and the City Council (300,000). The Peel Group, which is a leading company in Liverpool's ongoing regeneration, along with 62 further organisations generated sponsorship of 800,000 over 14 months.

According to Mr Taylor: "Quite simply, it has put Liverpool on the map as a future investment destinationwe are already seeing evidence of an increased level of inbound Chinese business delegations requesting to visit Liverpool."

Now, Congress down to its last strike to avoid debt-ceiling default

By rejecting the bill passed by the House Friday, the Senate essentially now has one last shot to get a debt ceiling increase through Congress before the Aug. 2 deadline.

After a night of high drama on Capitol Hill, a legislative solution to the debt crisis now shifts to the Senate, where leaders of both parties must now try to guess what will pass in the House ? perhaps the worst bet in all of politics.

The situation is the result of strategic mistakes in the buildup to Friday's debt-ceiling votes, which produced an outcome exactly the opposite of what GOP leaders had hoped. Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio had hoped to win support from House Democrats this week by scaling back the House's earlier ?cut, cap, and balance? bill. With Democratic support in the House, the bill would have had a credible shot in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Instead, his proposal alienated not only House Democrats but also the president and GOP conservatives. After an aborted attempt to hold a vote Thursday, an amended bill did at last pass the House Friday, 218 to 210, but without a single Democratic vote and without 22 Republican defectors. Later Friday, it failed in the Senate, which voted to table Mr. Boehner's bill, 59 to 41, effectively derailing it.

That makes the plan coming out of the Senate likely the last chance for Congress to vote to raise the debt ceiling before Aug. 2, when the country would default on some domestic spending obligations, which could include checks for Social Security recipients and veterans.

In short, months of negotiation have come down to a situation where the Senate has one shot to get it right ? a compromise that will pass both the Democrat-controlled Senate and the Republican-controlled House in three days. At a time when even the speaker of the House appears uncertain what his caucus will or will not support, it is a Herculean task.

?We all know the Senate is the only way out of this mess,? said Sen. Charles Schumer (D) of New York Friday night.

But even getting a proposal through the Senate appears to be a big reach, since any bill would need at least seven GOP votes to reach the 60-vote threshold to avoid a filibuster. Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada introduced a plan earlier this week that would cut spending by $2.2 trillion over 10 years and raise the debt ceiling through 2012 immediately. But Republicans, burned by similar bargains in the past, want assurances that those cuts will, in fact, take effect ? hence their insistence on an accompanying balanced-budget amendment.

It?s no coincidence that between 2008 and 2010, individual investors pulled more than $400 billion out of full-service brokerage accounts and put that money to work in discount brokerage accounts instead. This new trend toward self-directed, online investing is a very different phenomenon from the day-trading mania of the late 1990s. That was a fad driven by the frenzy for tech stocks, and it ended in disaster. The tech stock speculators of that era still haven?t recovered their money. But the self-directed investors of today are a different story. They?ve made a rational decision to take charge of their own investments instead of paying a small fortune to have someone else do it for them-someone whose financial interests may not be the same as those of their clients.

The trend toward online trading and investing has been helped along, of course, by the availability of things like mobile investment apps and user-friendly stock tracking software. The driving force, however, is not consumers? love of new technology but rather a desire to take control of their own finances. Indeed, the pull of do-it-yourself, self-directed online trading and investing is so strong that Merrill Lynch, the biggest name in full-service brokerage, recently threw up its hands and opened up a discount operation of its own.

If people are having second thoughts about full-service Wall Street brokerages, they aren?t feeling much better about mutual funds, with the heavy management and marketing fees many of them impose. Mutual fund companies are ingenious when it comes to choosing statistics that show their results in a positive light. What they can?t disguise, however, is the fact that most of them underperform the market as a whole. They don?t perform the same as the overall market; they perform worse, largely because of those onerous fees that most of them charge.

Some people argue for investing in low-fee, passive index mutual funds, which guarantee results that are only slightly worse than the market as a whole. Passive index funds might a better choice than actively managed funds that charge high fees for mediocre performance. Even so, in today?s fast-paced business environment, where companies and even industries can become outdated almost overnight, passive investing is hardly an ideal solution to the needs of ordinary investors.

Are there better solutions at hand? Indeed there are. By investing a little time and effort and harnessing the generous array of tools and data now available to everyone online-at little or no cost-investors can learn to do for themselves what many high-priced stock brokers do not do on the customers? behalf. They can develop a systematic methodology for identifying the stock market?s myriad opportunities, and they can pursue those opportunities with a disciplined eye toward securing their own financial futures.

Why the Burglar Alarm Control Panel is the Most Important ...

Having a home or business security system one can fully rely on is very important. The system will always comprise a number of components, from motion detectors to security cameras, but ensuring they work in cooperation within the system is essential. For this reason, burglar alarm suppliers point to the control panel as the heart of the system and recommend customers invest in the best.

The options available when it comes to security system control panels is quite vast, and there are several factors that should be considered before making a final decision. Scalability refers to the potential that any particular alarm system has to expand the number of zones it keeps an eye on. A zone is basically one circuit through which a signal circulates, just as with the simple example given above. Since one circuit cannot work efficiently in large areas, a system is broken down into several circuits, called zones.

A typical control panel can manage around 8 individual zones, which in the case of a home could be accounted for by the different parts, or wings, of the building. For example one zone is the upstairs west wing, while a second zone is the downstairs west wing. Some of the best control panels can accommodate hundreds of zones, making them specific to industrial or commercial complexes.

System Compatibility

As well as scaling systems upwards, security control panels can now accommodate the inclusion of fire alarm sensors too, meaning that both security and fire safety systems can be run from the same control panel. However, the panel must be compatible with sensors of other systems too. This capability removes the issue of having two separate alarm systems running simultaneously, namely intruder and fire alarm systems, thereby causing confusion.

Remote Management

In this internet age, being able to access and manage the control panel via remote methods is extremely convenient. It means that the security company or property owner can check on the security status of a building or premises without actually being there. He's always known breaking up with her was a mistake, and maybe the start of his heart-breaker problems, but who knows. Maybe he can convince her to take him back and try to make things works out.

A few of his friends have come to stay with him as well, deciding to try and kick start their band Wreckage and maybe even catch a record deal. The biggest surprise will come to both the boys and the girls when they find out they all managed to live in the same apartment complex together.

Will there be romance between Micheal and his first love? Will a few of his friends maybe find love of their own in one of his delightful ex's?

Who knows, but at least there will be some gooooood drama.

Q: You both started your business when you were 26. Is this the first entrepreneurial adventure for each of you? How did you meet and decide to start Newera? And what is your business start date?

A: This is not the first entrepreneurial adventure for John. He successfully started, ran and sold a company called Western Dock Service from 2001 to 2006. John and Emily met in 2002 while attending Western Michigan University. John graduated with a Sales and Business Marketing degree, and Emily graduated with a Bachelor in Psychology. John worked in the advertising and marketing industry with both a national brand and a local newspaper. Emily spent many years in the nonprofit human services industry, moving from providing direct services to working in development with fund-raising, event planning, and nonprofit marketing. After both had spent time in their respective areas of both for-profit and nonprofit marketing, it became apparent that social media was emerging as a crucial marketing tool, and both John and Emily believed that supportive services should be available to small businesses and nonprofits at prices they could afford. Newera Social Marketing officially opened for business on July 1, 2010. We?re very excited to celebrate our one year anniversary. We have loved being a small business supporting other small businesses here in the Springs and look forward to many more years!

Q: What does your business specializes in?and has your vision changed any since launching?

A: Newera Social Marketing specializes in social media marketing strategy, account management, and support. We began with monthly service packages and have since added several ? la carte service options. Our goal is to be able to find fresh solutions for any small business or nonprofit in an industry that changes quickly, sometimes even daily.

Q: Describe why you chose Colorado Springs as the city to launch your business in? and what?s your experience been like here in the Springs as an entrepreneur?

A: We both moved to Colorado Springs from Michigan around two years ago for jobs. We love that Colorado Springs is just south of a city like Denver: we see many of the positive big city influences inspiring Colorado Springs business owners without taking away the sense of pride in community that most business owners here in the Springs have. We know that many local businesses need to execute a successful marketing strategy to keep their doors open and thrive, but may not have the budgets of their big city neighbors. That?s part of our goal at Newera ? offering fresh, supportive social marketing solutions at prices that are affordable.

Q: What do you like most about living and working in Colorado Springs?

A: We get inspired everyday when we walk outside ? there is really nothing like being humbled every morning by the beautiful mountains surrounding our city. It helps remind us that we?re just a small piece of the puzzle here in our community, helping us to keep our awareness and be present for our clients, and we know this helps make us successful business owners as well.

Q: Do you belong to any local business organizations? For example, the Chamber, BBB, etc. What value have you received if you do participate, and if you don?t, what other methods do you use to promote and grow your business? What?s been most helpful?

A: We are very excited to be Chamber of Commerce members! We find it extremely valuable to participate in the many different events that the Chamber has to offer (networking, chamber universities, etc.). John belongs to the Strictly Business Leads Group and has enjoyed meeting and supporting the fantastic members! This is a group of dedicated, inspiring, and passionate business people here in the Springs and we couldn?t be prouder to be part of it! The main method that we use to promote and grow Newera is networking and asking for referrals. Referrals are by far the most helpful tool for growing a business like ours. We recently heard a statistic that 14% of people trust advertising and 98% trust peer to peer recommendations. Being involved with groups like the Chamber and Strictly Business really help us to have a foot in the door!

Q: What percentage of your business comes from Colorado Springs (and/or Colorado)? Are you looking to expand nationally?

A: Currently 85% of our business comes from Colorado Springs and 15% is out of state (FL, CA). We are definitely interested in expanding our national client base, however, our passion lies in being able to work with local business owners to help make a difference in this community!

Q: What local news outlets do you use to stay informed?

A: We utilize many local news sources on behalf of our clients, but our favorite print source is The Independent. We also enjoy tapping into the Facebook Pages of the many local businesses and organizations here in town! This really helps us stay up to date on what?s happening right here in the Springs, and because the presence of local Springs businesses grows daily on social media, we love seeing the progress and visibility of our clients and their community partners!

Q: What?s one of your favorite motivational quotes or inspirational ideas?

A: ?One of the great liabilities of life is that all too many people find themselves living amid a great period of social change, and yet they fail to develop the new attitudes, the new mental responses, that the new situation demands. Q: Favorite local spot to meet a client for a business lunch? And what do you recommend ordering here?

A: We love Jives Coffee Lounge in Old Colorado City. They make a fantastic banana mocha, and they?ll put it over ice now that summer is here!

Light traffic in LA despite Carmageddon (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Traffic moved fast in Los Angeles on Saturday despite a freeway shutdown and a so-called "Carmageddon" with the potential to clog streets, as a race between a plane and bicyclists upstaged fears of congestion.

The unprecedented construction-related shutdown of a 10-mile stretch of the 405 Freeway could, in a worst-case scenario, delay motorists for hours this weekend on alternate routes with ripple effects on other major highways.

"We don't want to claim victory at the moment, but it appears as though people are heeding the call that we issued to stay away or stay home," said Dave Sotero, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. "But it's not over yet."

The light traffic that began on Friday evening, when work crews started to block on-ramps and connectors to the closed stretch of the 405 Freeway, continued through the next morning and into Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Plans call for the canyon pass to reopen on Monday by 6 a.m., after a shutdown orchestrated to allow crews to demolish part of a bridge for a $1 billion freeway widening project.

Despite the worries about Carmageddon, a catchphrase description that has seized the motoring public's imagination, the most significant drama on Saturday was a race between a group of bicyclists and an airplane.

JetBlue Airways offered a $4 flight between Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, at the northeast end of Los Angeles, and Long Beach Airport 30 miles south, allowing commuters to bypass the 405 Freeway. In reaction, a team of six bike riders called Wolfpack Hustle made a bet they could beat the jet commuters.

The cyclists left northeast Los Angeles at 10:50 a.m. and arrived in Long Beach harbor at 12:24 p.m., participants said.

Ezra Horne, 24, a passenger who took the plane, said he left his home at the same time as the cyclists, but arrived an hour later at the finish line, after such delays as commuting to the airport, checking in, going through security and a cab driver who got lost.

The flight itself took only 12 minutes, and JetBlue called for a re-match.

"The cyclists rolled all over us this time," said Sebastian White, spokesman for the airline. "Out of fairness, we'd like to propose a best of three. How about LAX (in Los Angeles) to JFK (in New York) next time?"

Los Angeles is famous for its car culture and residents' heavy dependence on getting behind the wheel to drive to work and recreate, due to the city's relatively vast expanse and the meager public transit options in many areas.

As a result, the freeway shutdown had many officials in America's second-largest city worried, and they opened an emergency operations center to manage any potential problems.

Some residents booked hotels to avoid getting caught in traffic while commuting for work over the weekend.

On a typical weekend, 500,000 vehicles file through the stretch of freeway that is closed for the project, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The freeway stretch passes through a canyon that connects the occasionally sweltering San Fernando Valley to the more temperate westside and its tony beach communities.
