With the advent of another month of Cancer Awareness, not to mention the premiere of the movie 50/50, I thought I should set a couple of things straight for the sake of me and my cancer peeps. First on the list: breaking a stereotype. Welp, here it goes: cancer patients can be chubby.

Yes, let it be known that modern day chemotherapy often causes patients to gain weight, not lose weight?especially if you?re on the younger side of the life spectrum, like myself. Turns out that the steroids/various meds that help prevent violent projectile vomiting also cause fatty tissues to duplicate like double stuffed Oreos, while simultaneously increasing your appetite when you feel good. As a cancer patient, had I known this earlier, would I have taken the projectile vomiting route over the double stuffed Oreo route? Would I have chosen a life of sleeping by the toilet bowl to prevent some harmless weight gain? Well, that?s just ridiculous. I?m a 23 year old female with Hodgkin?s lymphoma. The most important thing is to feel better and get better. But to answer your question? yeah probably.

Just kidding. That was just a plug to get you all to think I?m the mastermind behind @whitegrlproblem? or was it?

Anyway, hearing the news that cancer patients can get chubby was naturally a shock to me, probably one of the biggest shocks I?d experienced since The Santa Claus Incident, one of the darker periods of my childhood. Second place on the shock-o-meter would have to go to the time I discovered that cancer, unlike Santa, was indeed real. Because the doctors told me I had it, and all? But I digress.

Upon realizing my pending weight gain, I rode the shock wave for a little while until it plopped me in Bum City, USA. Shorty was bummin?. Mainly because I had already told many of my friends to make way for the gaunt and skinny Katie 2.0?a new, hot, older version of my 17 year old, 120 pound?albeit cancerous?self. Cancer sucks, but at least I?ll lose my college weight, right?! Wrong. Luckily, my shock and dismay only served to further ignite a call to action from deep within. In other words, I am officially joining, dare I say spear-heading, the rebel forces that hope to one day crush the often stereotypical, sometimes mythical Hollywood creature that is The Cancer Patient.

You know who they are. They are the elegantly gaunt, milky skinned, perfectly bald actors and actresses who have helped to maintain this ultra-skinny cancer persona for years. Susan Sarandon in Step Mom, that girl in My Sister?s Keeper, even Mandy Moore in A Walk to Remember. The list continues. I mean, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the main character in 50/50, already has the whole frail Cancer Patient thing going for him, so you can bet your bottom dollar he will only serve to add fuel to the fire. And while it is true that, yes, this persona used to be the norm for all cancer patients, things change. That?s right, Mr. Spielberg, times they are a-changin?. Times are a-changin and medicine is a-changin. Cancer patients can get chubby.

So how am I going to break this widespread notion that all Cancer Patients are tiny and rail thin even in the present era? I?m glad you asked. Actually, I?ve already been traveling along the Selfless Road to Weight Gain to End Cancer Patient Stereotypes for a few months. The funny thing is, though, I didn?t even know I was on the road until now. Physical roads have never been my strong point, thank you Google Maps. Metaphoric roads, however, are totes my thing. Life is a highway, and ya better believe I?m gonna ride it. So it was weird that I didn?t actually realize how selfless a road I had embarked on until the first pit stop. Being selflessly selfless is what we call that, my friends.

Before I continue, I should probably inform you that the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, sometimes referred to as ?Spa de la Chemo,? is also a built-in Weight Watchers. Every time you go in, they take an accurate account of your weight and record it in your very own excel spreadsheet. So, after about 4 months of doing chemo/weight watchers, I decided it was time to see if my weight had fluctuated from June to September. Partly because I was curious, and partly because this spreadsheet was 3 months and 29 days longer than any previous attempt I?d made at recording my weight. So, there I was in the middle of saying ?I mean, even the muffin top I feel right now is probably just in my head, right? Crazy meds? when the nurse chimed in with, ?Wow, you?ve gained over 10 pounds already?.but no worries!? Yeah. No worries!! Only 3 more months to go!! You can still eat sushi with your girls if the sushi is vegetarian and covered in brown rice!!! Kisses!

But seriously, I was not actually worried. Even when my doctor explained the whole dealio, predicting that we were probably lookin? at a total 20 pound weight gain, I took it all in stride. Yes, I now know what I have to do. Now, when people tell me ?You look good!? when they really mean ?You?re balding, but at least you?re plump! I thought you?d be frail! Awesome!? I must maintain my heroic stance, smile, and say ?Yes, I do look good. Thank you.? This is my mission now, my destiny: To shatter an age old image fueled by Hollywood and, um, real life. I choose to embrace this weight gain?not for myself?but for all the lymphoma patients out there who also feel like inflated poop. Pass me that hamburger. I?m ready to become a martyr for the cause. Can?t say the same for cancer itself though, kinda want to beat that.

If you are paying with a credit card, explain how interest figures into the monthly payment. Teaching them now about credit card debt can help them better understand it and avoid being another statistic.

Explain the importance of retirement savings

Now that you?ve explained interest to your young adult and they have gained more knowledge from you and math classes in school, talk about the importance of starting a savings account for retirement. This is something to teach your child while they are in high school and maybe starting their first job. ?If their job offers a 401(k), explain that contributing to the fullest extent is beneficial to their future.

Hopefully these suggestions can help you introduce your child to finance, help them understand the importance of money and the responsibility they have to protect it. You've been hearing a lot about it both from us here at Tecca and practically every other tech news site on the internet ? it's the new Facebook profile feature called Timeline, and today it begins its slow but steady rollout to the masses. The Timeline is essentially the evolution of what used to be your profile. If you've come to love your traditional Facebook home page, you may be a bit miffed to learn that it is in the process of being slowly eradicated.

The social network is gradually replacing the profile page format of every one of its hundreds of millions of users with the new Timeline. You can find out if your account has been converted simply by clicking on your name on the very top bar of your Facebook account. The new feature will showcase a plethora of your activity going all the way back to your very first Facebook post ? meaning your entire social network identity needs to be spotless.

So what can you do about those pesky college party pics that you've been tagged in (or maybe even posted yourself)? Or how about those check-ins that you might not want a future employer to know about? Here's how to clean up your Timeline before you publish it, so the whole world will only see what you want it to see.

Ready or not, here comes the Timeline

Find out what you've got
It will take time, but thankfully Facebook's records only go back a few years, even for the earliest users. The first thing you'll need to do to clean up your Timeline is review what's already in there. Depending how active you've been and how long you've been on the?social network, this may take a while. But it's better to do it now than do damage control after someone else finds out about your dubious activities, right?

There are several ways to review your Timeline. You can simply scroll down and go backwards in time, reviewing each item displayed. However, this will not show everything that is available to visitors to your profile. You'll need to click on each year ? and in some cases, each month ? in order to get the full accounting of all the activities and items on your Timeline. Once you've drilled down and identified the items you want to remove, it's as easy as pie. It's just a lot more tedious (yes, even if you're making the pie from scratch).

Removing Timeline items is easy

Out with the old, in with the new
Think of this process as a digital version of spring cleaning. You'll finally get a chance to go back through all of your stuff on Facebook, even the things you've forgotten about, and remove content that makes you seem silly or immature or is otherwise embarrassing in some way.

Let's take the example of a photograph. Once you come to the photograph in question, you'll see an option below the photo on the right-hand side to remove it from your Timeline. See, we told you it was easy!

It's just as easy to get rid of check-ins and other status updates that you prefer others not stumble upon. With events, locate what looks like a pencil near the top right of the status update. Click on that (it's Facebook's version of an edit icon), and you'll be able to remove the status update from your Timeline. You can also determine if you want an app to continue posting stuff to your timeline or remove its publishing privileges altogether.

You can keep new things from hitting your Timeline

Timeline is like a time machine
In some ways, the new Timeline feature is like a time machine. You'll get to go back and become all nostalgic over things you posted years ago (if you've been on Facebook since the college days). You'll get the grand picture of just how much you post each day. You might even run into some old friends you've forgotten all about (again).

But the most beautiful part of the process is that the Timeline can be edited. Without this feature, we're sure Timeline would cause many a headache in the business world. We're not even sure we could survive a Timeline-induced trip down memory lane without being able to edit the past.

While you're at it, this is probably a good time to review?Facebook's privacy settings and decide who exactly you want to be able to view your Timeline. After that, it should all be peaches and cream. [Editor's note: Less Pollyanna-esque types are welcome to make comparison to?1984's "memory holes," where information deemed unfit for the public good is summarily burned.]

Finally, remember that just because it's not on Facebook, that doesn't mean it never happened. Just remember that what you post tomorrow can end up on your Timeline as well.

Redefining the kilogram and the ampere

ScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2011) ? Groundbreaking research by the National Physical Laboratory's (NPL) Quantum Detection Group and an international team of collaborators is underpinning the biggest change in the Syst?me Internationale d'unit?s (SI Units) since the system began 50 years ago.

It has long been the goal of scientists to relate all of the unit definitions to fundamental constants of nature, making them stable and universal, and giving them closer links to each other and the quantities they measure.

Key units to be redefined are the kilogram (mass) and the ampere (electric current). Presently the kilogram is defined by a physical lump of platinum-iridium and the ampere is defined via the force produced between two wires.

The goal is to define the kilogram in terms the Planck constant h and the ampere in terms of the electron charge e.

Making this change relies on the exactness of the relationships that link these constants to measurable quantities.

The quantum Hall effect defines a relationship between these two fundamental physical constants. Experiments are needed to test the quantum Hall effect in different materials in order to prove whether or not it is truly universal.

Until recently the effect was exclusively observed in a few semiconductor materials. A few years ago the quantum Hall effect was also observed by the same team in graphene, a completely different type of material with a very different electronic structure.

This research directly compared the quantum Hall effect in graphene with that observed in a traditional semiconductor material. Graphene is hotly tipped to surpass conventional materials in many important applications, partly due to its extraordinary electrical properties.

The results confirmed that the quantum Hall effect is truly universal with an uncertainty level of 86 parts per trillion, supporting the redefinition of the kilogram and ampere. The quantum Hall effect in graphene is so good that it should be the material of choice for quantum resistance metrology.

The discovery was highlighted in Nature on September 29.

JT Janssen, NPL Science Fellow and the lead author of the research, said: "Many metrology laboratories around the world have been striving to do this experiment and it is a real achievement that the NPL team and its co-workers were the first to get this key result. It turns out that the quantum Hall effect in graphene is very robust and easy to measure -- not bad for a material that was only discovered six years ago."

The research was conducted in collaboration with the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures, Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), Lancaster University (UK) and Link?ping University (Sweden).

Oil rises above $82 on Europe debt progress hope

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil rose above $82 a barrel Tuesday in Asia, following stock markets higher amid hopes that Europe was finally girding for a major program to prevent debt-strapped Greece from going bankrupt.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up $2 to $82.24 a barrel at midafternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 39 cents to finish at $80.24 per barrel in New York on Monday.

In London, Brent crude for November delivery rose $1.73 at $105.67 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Energy prices followed gains in stock markets on optimism that European finance ministers might soon take action to stem the region's sovereign debt crisis.

For weeks, investors have been worried that Europe's problems could lead to another recession, which would cut demand for oil and gasoline. Demand for gasoline in the U.S. is already below year-ago levels.

Analysts were also looking to consumer confidence data expected later Tuesday out of the U.S. for clues on the future strength of demand for fuel. Oil prices have slumped since spring as concern has grown about the global economy, but signs of improving consumer sentiment could boost crude.

"As for today all eyes will likely be on September's consumer confidence index" which is expected to rise to 46.0 from 44.5 in August, energy trader and consultant The Schork Group said in a report.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 4 cents to $2.84 per gallon, gasoline futures fell 3 cents to $2.53 per gallon and natural gas rose 4 cents to $3.82 per 1,000 cubic feet.

At a research event this past week I heard the director of a major, multidisciplinary research center say something which got me thinking? and I?m wondering your thoughts.

To paraphrase; Once diagnosed, people with multiple sclerosis should understand their obligation to research. I think ?responsibility? and obligation can be interchangeable in this discussion, so I?ll use both.

While no one would argue the point of personal choice in the decision to take part in a research study, I think it?s an interesting point to ponder; our responsibility to research.

By ?obligation,? I did not take the doctor?s comment to mean strictly one dimensional. The obvious association I made with his statement was the act of enrolling in a research study. There are several ways, beyond being in a subject, that afford us the ability to be a part of research.

Research costs money ? simple fact. We can directly donate our own money to specific research programs and/or institutions. We can help such institutions raise funds by partaking in various fundraising events with them. If finding a particular research institution proves difficult in your particular area of the world, there are MS service organizations which fund MS research from grand, international studies right down to local, quality of life research which you could work with.

Many people don?t know that most of these service organizations allow for donations to be dedicated to research (usually at a minimum donation level. You can?t give $5 and say, ?I only want this to go to stem cell research for MS nervous regeneration.?

So, there?s money. But all of these organizations also thrive on volunteer support for their day-to-day existence. If funding or fundraising is not your calling, consider helping answer the phones or manning a table at a health fair or stuffing envelopes.

If you?re already involved with a university or MS center which conducts research, how about scheduling yourself to speak at an MS self-help group to talk about local opportunities around multiple sclerosis research?

Even within the rather obvious avenue of becoming a research subject ourselves, I find misunderstanding.

Many of us think of MS research and automatically jump to MS drug research and do not want to participate. Nothing could be further from accurate. The vast majority of research going on in multiple sclerosis does not involve disease modifying drugs. There are studies in lifestyle, exercise, nutrition, wellness, imaging, vitamin D, viral assays, etc? and that?s just from looking on the Web site for one local MS center in my city!

Some studies ? and you have to look kind of hard ? even enroll people in remote locations. This can be the perfect way to get involved for those living with MS outside the normal ?research zones.? Some even telephone survey studies.

I have taken part in well over a dozen research studies at a number of locations and only one of them used drugs at all ? that being a study of MS and depression using an anti-depressant drug as part of the trial.

I must agree with the research doc who said that I have an obligation to the research community and to my fellow MS patients. I have dipped from the well of knowledge in order to find the best way I can to live with multiple sclerosis. Therefore, I just avail myself to add back to the body of knowledge.

This is my personal view of MS research and my responsibility cum involvement. I?m wondering if you feel an obligation to be a part of research. Have you wanted to be a part of something but don?t know where to start? Is research someone else?s calling; not yours?

No one from either the state Legislature or city government will take credit for the law, which passed in 1991, and the process of drafting pension legislation in Springfield is so shrouded in secrecy that there's no way of knowing exactly whom to hold responsible.
