May 29th may mark the end of Greyhound Awareness Week 2011 in the United Kingdom, but the fight to free the breed from the fear of literally running for their lives continues. Following are a few of the famous faces who have used their star power to shine a spotlight on the plight of racing dogs:
In recent months the Irish Greyhound Board made a proposal to export greyhounds to China? a plan which was recently denied by the Irish Department of Agriculture thanks in part to Greyhound Crusaders and the British celebrities who added their voices to the organization?s efforts, including Ricky Gervais (The Office) and Annette Crosbie (known stateside for the movie Calendar Girls and the Britcom One Foot in the Grave).
Although one victory was achieved, the struggle to save greyhounds from a fate of racing and facing euthanization at the end of their brief career continues, and 30 Irish stars? including Brendan Gleeson (known to fans of the Harry Potter franchise as Mad-Eye Moody); Andrea Corr of the pop group The Corrs and singer/songwriter Damien Rice? have recently reached out to world through a letter of protest against the Irish Greyhound Board?s proposal to expand the sickening sport by developing greyhound racetracks in China.
