There are three known types of asbestos disease, the first two of three are not fatal but can be a huge a drain on any health plan going into the future. The last one cause cancers, which in a number of cases have been proven to be fatal. All three of these diseases are caused by the ongoing inhalation of asbestos particles.
The first illness is pleural plaques, which in essence is the fibres migrating to the outside lung lining. This causes scaring and then any further inhalation causes calcium deposits. This lead to damage of the lungs which results in lower oxygen levels in the blood and the inability of the lungs to expand properly. This also causes fluid build up which may not always be detected.
The second one is asbestosis, which damages the lungs and leaves them vulnerable to a whole range of infections. As a result of lung damage the patient is unable to infuse enough oxygenated blood into the body and this could lead to heart failure. The patient then becomes a high risk case, for viral infections and lung infections.
In the case of lung cancer, the inhaled fibers cannot be broken down by the natural defence system. They then embed themselves in the outer lining and start causing damage to the surrounding cells. This process has also been known to cause the formation of tumors, which in a number of cases have been fatal.
The level of exposure to the different types and sizes of asbestos will determine the impact on the person?s overall health. The softer curved fibres in most case result in airway irritation and infections, as well as scarring. The straighter, ticker fibers cannot be broken done and absorbed by the body and they cause more damage as time passes.
These diseases are prevalent in people who have had years of exposure to different asbestos types in their jobs. In many cases the illness can lie dormant for years and only present much later in life. To date no real cure or treatment has been discovered for this type of disease.
